We have been steady working for a month & 1/2 on our filter project.
We used common materials to make it cost efficient while making it as simple as possible.
In our case I'm using a PLC but it is doable to use timers or mechanical switches.
      So here we go:
We're starting with 2 thirty gallon drums
The second barrel is used for a wrap around where top and bottom are cut off and is sliced in four equal pieces.

We drilled 7/8" holes spaced 1" apart. The 40 micron screen will go between the 1st barrel and the wrap around.
One of the sections of the first barrel is cut so we can access the inside of the drum.

We used four 4" toilet flanges as bearings.
We bore the diameter to be able to slide a 4" pipe without having a tight fit.
We used a 4" tee and blocked one side where the pond water comes in.
The other side will be connected to the tray (drain).

Next we mount the 96 toothed 3/8" pitch (35) aluminum sprocket.
We used S.S. 316 screws to attach the sprocket to the garolite, which we threaded and insulated the screws with plastic washers.
We then attached this to the 30 gallon barrel using S.S. 316 screws insulated with garolite washers.

I am anxious to see this one.

Where did you get the sprocket?

Then we've got the 55 gallon drum barrel.
We attached two of the four toilet flanges to the 55 gal barrel and positioned the 2" existing threaded hole towards the bottom and cut the top.
The pump will be hooked up to this 2" threaded hole.
We took the 30 gal barrel and dropped it into the 55 gal barrel.
We then took the tee with the boot which is cut to fit exactly between the two toilet flanges and attached a 4" coupling with an o-ring on it.
We took that and slide it in towards the back of the 55 gal barrel.
Then we slide the 4" pipe thru the front of the 55 gal barrel.
We put the o-ring and a coupling and pushed it into the boot which is attached to the tee.
The couplings will be pushing against the 4 1/2" o-rings acting as a seal and at the same time holding the 30 gal barrel into position.

The sprocket was purchased from JR Race Car
      http://www.jrracecar.com/35-split-rear-sprocket/
Choose the 96 tooth option and the middle diameter is 4 1/2" which fits loosely over the 4" pipe.

We cut a piece of wood the size of the tray and we drilled a 5" diameter hole.
We used styrene for our tray, cut the corners and drilled a 3" hole in the middle.
We then put the styrene in the oven @ 300 degrees for 10 mins.
We put a 5" coupling to fit in the wooden form.
We then forced the styrene over the form and the coupling.

      The drive motor was next.
We made a mounting bracket of garolite and used Acetal roller chain with single strand plus stainless steel side plates.
Originally we tried it with a 10 toothed steel sprocket but had to change it to 30 toothed plastic sprocket where it takes 7 1/2 seconds to rotate 3/4 of the drum.

I am curious as to how much you're saving by DIYing a RDF and ultimately how effective it will be.
I am also curious to see how you are going to rig up the cleaning cycle sensors.

      Love the thread

Hi Zac, yes it is! But when you actually use it.

I have to say that I have always admired your products and your determination to succeed in this hobby.
You have been able to make your hobby bring you home an income.
As for me it's just a past time that I'd like to if possible share with others.

Hi Rain, how much we are going to save or end up spending we will have to see at the end of the project.
Sometimes it's not how much you spend but the enjoyment of making something and succeeding at it.
I remember Carlso making his sieve and it cost him more in the end then had he bought one but he is proud of it because it was something he made.
As for the sensors we're not there yet.

We made two spray bars, one with 2" spacing the other with 3" spacing.
We made the brackets for mounting out of garolite.
We tried the spray bar with an external pump but only got 6 psi.
We then bought a jet pump but haven't tried it out yet.
As you can see in the picture we only have about a 25 degree spray and those are 50 degree spray nozzles.
The power is diminished after about 2"
We'll see how it'll turn out with these nozzles and the jet pump.
We may end up going with a wider angle if need be.
