      Painting barrels

I am going to be using some 55 gallon barrels in my re-do and need to hide them in the landscape/garden. They are currently white and would stick out like a sore thumb. Has anyone tried to use the Krylon products? If so, how did they work? Did you use another type of paint product? How long did it last?

I know caulks and adhesives don't adhere to HDPE plastics and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting some color to stick.

      Thanks,

I used the Krylon fusion paint and it worked well. I used brown, dark green, black, tan and gray to make a camoflauge colour scheme.

Then a year later I accidently blasted most of it off with my pressure washer. Oh well, I can repaint.

I've used the Krylon Fusion as well and had the same experience.
If you spray them in place and don't need to touch them it holds well but abrasion or water pressure will remove it.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

hdpe is well known for its properties of being non-stick. most anything you apply to it will eventually come off.

is this going to be freestanding or used directly to feed a waterfall?

if freestanding you may be able to wrap something around it like a bamboo panel or sheeting. if you are feeling decorative you could find something else to wrap it or hide it and paint it with a design or other artwork. you could hide the barrels in a corner behind some latticework with vines or make an enclosed arbor with a bench with a fake rear panel to hide the barrels. there are quite a number of other ideas around you can use to hide the filters.

paint may work temporarily but i'm not so sure its a permanent fix.

And don't let a tree fall on it... even Krylon will come off.

Sanding with coarse sandpaper helps greatly. Also make sure the surface is super clean before painting. The paint products made for plastic such as the Fusion line work better than other paints. A light sandblasting of the plastic works wonders also, (if you have the equipment). As someone above has already stated HDPE is difficult to keep paint on.

I know they use a chlorinated polyolefin primer on PP car bumpers, which like HDPE are very difficult to paint as well. I think PPG makes it, Then an acrylic enamel over the top. Sounds like too much work to me.
If I were you I would either buy a rain barrel to convert since they come in all colors shapes and sizes and are meant to be seen, or as someone else stated, cover it with other material. Also don't forget the old standby - DUCT TAPE!!! (JK)

That is a good idea. I have been seeing some very attractive rain barrels this spring at very good prices.

Thanks everyone for your input. Looks like painting is out and I will have to find another way to hide my barrels.
