      New Turtle Pond Project

Looking at making a turtle pond from a 300 gal rubbbermaid stock tank. My son has been driving me nuts to move the turtles outside. I have a Little giant flex series ext pump w/strainer basket, pump does up to 3000 gph which i know is way overkill but what I have at the time. Probably use a rheostat to trim the power. Gonna use my Nexus Ez Pod for the time until I sell it. Now my idea is either to run a BD or cut a hole in the side towards the bottom and have the water pulled from there. I am not putting it in the ground so in case I wanna move it, also to try to keep critters from going in it. Only gonna fill it up little more than half way for now. I have 7 babies turtles that are gonna be housed in it. Any ideas or comments would be appreciated.

For small tanks I found bottom drains too much of a hassle. For me anyway, drain and fill works easiest. Turtles also benefit from frequent water changes and aren't affected like fish as long as water temps don't vary too much.
I use an Easy Pod on my 600 gallon outdoor turtle pond and a Eheim Pro 3 on my 150 gallon indoor stock tank.

yeah figured bd probably be too much work for a turtle pond. I'll post some pics when its done. Snappers are very easy to work with they dont really come out of the water and eat anything.

was thinking of framing the turtle pond in and putting this rock on the outside or just planting some nice bushes around it

Nice rock. Looks good. Do your turtles have a way to bask on a dry area? Did you raise your own feeder fish? I read not to feed them petstore feeders because they are usually sick or have a disease. I feed my turtle ReptoMin Floating Food Sticks & fresh veggies. Plus lily pads, parrots feather from my pond. She has grown & done very well without feeders.

they eat turtle food but one day these will be released back into the wild, thats why I let them catch their own food. I've fed feeders to all my pets over the years with no problem. Snappers will eat anything. They also rarely bask like other turtles that need the heat to dry their shells. Once I can get some plants maybe they will climb on top of them. The pond will eventually go in the ground when the turtles can defend themselves if they are to crawl out.

now my option is do I put nice layer of pea gravel in there so they have something to walk on the bottom and burrow themselves in if they feel the need. I know its a no no but for the turtles I feel I should. Was thinking of throwing water lettuce in there to give them some coverage.

got the filter running what a difference the water is so clear. gonna make a platform next week waiting for the pieces to come, so they can come out now and then. not sure if I wanna pipe the flow into the bottom of the pond or keep it something like this.

That turtle reminds me of pics of kids that end up falling asleep in the oddest of positions.

Looks great. Do you use some type of cover or top for protection?
