      Settlement Chamber Volume

My pond is 3500gl. I am using only one Nexus 210. The Nexus has to be cleared every 3 days. I am thinking add a SC before the Nexus. Due to the space limitation, I wouldn't be able to build a lager SC. What is the minimum volume to have SC work properly? Does anyone have a formula that I can do calculation? Anyone can give some additional ideal?

      Thanks

      Tony

I think that the general recommendation is about 10% of the pumps flow per hour. In other words if your pump pumped 3000 gallons per hour you would need a 300 gallon settlement chamber. Hope this helps. Good luck, Gene G

Among the many principles in the internet, I found this to be the most meaningful:

For an effective Settlement Chamber, water should stay in chamber for at least 3 min. To compute for the size of the chamber . . .

      flow rate
      ------------------------------- = size of chamber
      60min per hr / 3min per turnover

      3,500 GPH
-------------- = 175 gallons needed for settlement chamber
      60 / 3

Bigger than that . . . even better! Hope this helps.

General rule..10 percent of your BD/inlet flow for pure settlement action. If you can incorporate a static pre-filter basket inside the SC, SC tank can be reduces quite abit since you are now relying on combined settlement and mechanical filtration. Any time you're looking at gravity fed SC, you need tanks/barrels can be buried, if not placed in a filter pit.

The SC on my QT works pretty good. It is a 55g barrel (about 22" diameter) and it's being feed by a 3" pipe at about 1,000 GPH. So...

The water in the 3" pipe is traveling at 143 inches per hour
The water in the 22" barrel is traveling at 2.6 inches per hour

Using 1,000 GPH / 10 formula says I should be using 100 gallon SC.

What is "static pre-filter basket"? How it looks like? Do you have an image?

      Thanks

Here's one in a 55 gallon barrel, and a drawing of an option of how they're plumbed...

Here's a link to the thread with more examples too:
