Smile Chag 2013 Purdin koi grow out

My two koi arrived and they are settled in a small indoor heated QT. They have three koi of same size with them .They are eating and look healthy. The Showa was pick
#36 second on my list,is about 6.5 inches, pattern is very nice, I think have potential to be a nice Showa.Arrived with a split pectoral fin(i know will hill on is on).I am very happy with.
The Kohaku was pick #38 was high on my kohaku list, is about 8 inches and i have the feeling it will grow into a big koi .I like the skin color and body conformation .Hope will turn out nice, time will tell.
They are a little skittish now but i am sure they will calm down in a week or two .
Here are some pictures.I will post a video when i learn how to do it.

I think there is a lot of Sumi that is going to break through and really change the look of this koi in the next year to two. Hopefully the beni doesn't get over run by the sumi.

Love the showa -I think it will be very good probably in the traditional style with a higher proportion of sumi.

I agree! Gonna be a nice traditional showa Most of these fish look to have the makings of a nice lightning sumi pattern on the head, you can see the hazy line going down diagonally on this one under the hi.

My two koi have been in my small heated Q/T for over six weeks.Their roommates where two small koi from the pond. They all have good appetite, been feeding them 3 to 4 times per day,i am doing water changes every other day to keep ammonia levels low. This weekend i will take some pictures and measure them before i put them in the pond.
I will need to relocate some koi that i have ( i will give them to friends with ponds ) to make room for them.

I am going to have the task of moving all my pond grade koi to the aquaponic system so I can use the main pond to grow my better fish with more space...but I'm not complaining...I got 2000+ gallons extra with the A/P setup...woohoo

      I lost my showa
Last Sunday i noticed that my showa dorsal fin was almost gone and the surrounding area was missing scales and reddish some scales were in the bottom of the tank
( fin rot ? still stressed after six weeks in Q/T the kohaku and the other fish were fine) all this must have happened in the last twelve hrs. I panicked because this was the first
time something like this happened to one of my koi. And the first thing that came in my mind was to disinfect with salt i immediately removed the koahu and the other fish and moved them to another tank, so I melted one cup of kosher salt and added the liquid to my 50 gal Q/T. This was in the morning. In the afternoon I added 2 tsp of PIMAFIX to 50 gal of water following the directions. The following day I decided to go and buy some MELAFIX and added 1 tsp to the Q/T per the directions. I read that the two of them can be used together for tissue regeneration, healing and internal/external infection. The two fish were lethargic when I checked them in the afternoon and the area of the dorsal fin on the showa that was reddish before was now whitish and I thought that it was a sign that the medicine was working. The following morning I went to check on the two fish and to my shock, the showa was on his side and not moving and the other fish was moving slowly. So I put the showa in a container of conditioned water that I had ready in case I needed it to do a water change. After a half hour I decided the showa was gone and I disposed of it. I then put the other fish in the same tub of water and he started to move around normally. Now my question is, what should I have done to save that showa? Obviously I did something wrong and I feel bad about it. Any advice will be welcome so I don't make the same mistake in the future.

I don't have an answer, but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry.

If you don't get a response after a bit, I'd repost your question in the Emergency Forum, as
those that would have suggestions, might not look at a thread for a growout.

Again, so sorry... I hope the kohaku comes around.

Sorry best of luck with your kohaku. Don't think there was anything you could have done to save the showa.

Jim this is a update on the Kohaku. It as grown since i received, was 8 inches is now 13 inches. Picture was taken with cell phone (camera battery dead) not very clear,
did not want to net it a second time.I think it looks in good shape and the growth is OK.I am very happy the way is coming along.

Jim I think I'm doing it wrong. What is the proper way to post a picture? Why is it coming so big?

Jim, I think I found the way to post a picture correctly. Let's see if it works.

Don't forget to get measurements and enter your grow out into the Virtual Koi/Goldfish show, see how well your selecting and husbandry stacks against the others in the grow out.
