So is it better to have BIG beni spots to hopefully stay as they get bigger and older? As Steve is saying... have spots which are big enough to extend down past or at least to the lateral line? I just recently started researching "what to look for when purchasing a small koi" Unless I'm not understanding correctly.. You want a koi with it's patterns and colors deep in the skin. Like to be under a few layers of off white to "come up" later? Sorry if I'm hijacking Steve's thread. How about just fixing the fish Steve? like with some waterproof fingernail polish? JUST KIDDING.... Sorry the fish has gone south!

I think as opposed to just big it needs to be better quality beni, or else you just have more beni to fail. I went back and looked for the
"saw tooth" pattern in the kiwa that Russ talked about.

Sometimes I learn the most when things fail... you'd think I'd be a genius by now. At least his shimmies are coming in nicely.

I have to agree with Russ on this one Steve. The indicators were there from the start regarding the "saw-tooth" kiwa. Also, it has "hard" beni which, as soon as it began to put on serious bulk/size, it caused the beni to simply disappear. In the future, look to the kiwa on the beni plates for indicators of better quality along with the sheen of the skin throughout the fish. Fish like this can be "maintained" if not grown too quickly as in "forced" growth. Some fish are just not meant to been grown too fast, especially in their earlier developmental years and this one is a prime example. although, this one would have probably failed no matter what you did, sorry.

      Thanks Mike,
And I agree, Russ was right on the mark, and once he pointed it out it was obvious!
But that's why I like these growouts... invaluable lessons that I seldom remember if someone just tells me, but if
I see it, I have a better chance of retaining that info.

And it could be... I'm terrible at telling the difference. But either way, I don't hold out any hope of anything coming out of
this experiment than a companion in the QT.

I give you credit, you have probably held out the longest on that grow out.

Thanks for the updates, I bailed out on mine probably 2yrs ago. It was a fun experience, but now a days, I would prefer a grow out of higher quality koi to learn from.
