      Showa #3 Growout Journal

Since the new feesh are due to arrive tomorrow at noon I decided to start my journal, mostly due to anticipation! So I'll start with a bit of husbandry info:
For now the showa (along with 1 other fish in the box and 2 qt canaries from the main herd) will be in 400g till being moved into 2,500g when it warms up. Most likely in a few weeks.

      Size on arrival: 9"
*Feeding regimen will be: 2:5 ratio of Kenzen to Blackwater Max multiple times per day along with homemade fish jello and treats like peas and shrimp.
*Water changes nearly every day of anywhere from 2-10%, sometimes 20%
*Why did I pick the fish? Pretty much jumped out at me from the pix, I prefer kindai-esque fish over classic showa and even though I ranked another fish above it I decided to go with intuition. Also the large amount of sunken sumi is gonna be interesting to watch develop, once that part near the tail rises I think it'll balance the pattern nicely!

So, here's the pic from the growout thread, new ones when the package arrives, tomorrow. Hope it's warm out so I can take a few photos with natural light!!

They're here!!!! So I got one showa growout, and one little matsukawabake bought a bit later, showa is 9" and stunning...I noticed the body shape and confirmation is a LOT different from some of my cheaper fish which I'm guessing is a testament to the quality. The little squirt is 4" (and not a growout fish tho I will be updating because he's going to change a lot) and has a small split fin because the whooole time he was trying to wiggle under the big one for protection, it'll be fine though they look great and are already active after being in the pool for less than an hour. EDIT: they ate already

      This is gonna be great

Nice Showa! That one has some great looking skin and should look even better after some more development.

Thanks! I think there's a lot of sumi to come in the future, I can see a big patch on the shoulder.

He's recovered mostly, active and finally started eating again...spitting out pellets every so often, I think the gill damage is irritating him, but he's ALIVE

And *almost* handfed today. So I think we're in the clear

Well I've got a pic update...he grew all of 1/2" ...I think mostly due to the stress of the incident. So we'll see what happens in the big pool this season.

Mine look bigger also and now that Summer is here I have high hopes.

I won't bowl them until sometime in July.

      Good Luck with yours.

Same!! I don't want to bother him any more than necessary! He's competing with the big guys for food and is doing a very good job, no longer doing the pellet-spitting and he doesn't linger at the surface as much so I think the gills are healing well. Currently feeding Blackwater Max with a few handfuls of Mizuho Growth & Staple mixed in (free samples from the Tri State show )

We should set a day for July sometime where we all do a bowl & measure to see how everyone's fish are doing

I know you're all involved in a grow out thing, but one important thing to understand is that while the water temps are up high, and as the fish are going into "grow mode" their scales become somewhat loose and netting/handling them in these upcoming months, until, say the end of October, is ill-advised as they could rather easily lose a scale or three in the process. They're also harder to catch as they are the most active during this period as well.

Some things, like koi, are best left alone during this time period.
