      anual pond clean out

hello, does anybody totally pump out there koi pond once a year? I have a 20000 gal pond and wanted to know if and when its a good idea to pump it all out. I am assuming the best time to do so would be when the pond water temp is the same temp as the water coming out of the garden hose? I have never had a reason to do it in the 6 or 7 years I have had it. I have never had any build up of any kind in the bottom except in the spring time from the fall leaves. the kids get all that out when they start swimming in it. any advise?

I have but but it was with sick fish. If your water is good, no sense in dumping the whole thing, just do 10% weekly water changes.

No reason to ever do a 100% water change unless there is something toxic in the water. I probably shouldn't say anything, but I shudder to think of kids swimming in the pond with the fish. Humans swim in pools that have chlorinated water for their well being and safety because of water born bacteria. Chlorine is toxic to fish, so no chlorine for their well being. But, your kids....

I agree that in a properly designed koi pond there is no need to do a 100% water change. In an Aquascapes type pond that has gravel on the bottom, then removing the fish to temporary quarters, completely draining the pond washing the gravel, refilling the pond, and putting the fish back is a necessity. This places a lot of stress on the fish, but to go more than two years without such a cleanout will be even more stressful. The crud that builds up in the gravel will lead to problems down the road if it is not removed.

I recently did a 100% water change - the first one in 6 years, but that was only because I needed to do some major repairs on the pond. I tried to figure out a way to do the repairs by only lowering the water level by a couple of feet, but that was just not going to work, so I did a complete emptying. I ended up losing one fish shortly after they went back into the pond, although I do not know if the two events were related. I never saw any signs of distress, and I never found the body. The fish just went missing. My wife did say she saw a heron in the neighborhood, but she did not see it near the pond.

I shudder to think of kids swimming in the pond too. Not the same as a pool by a long shot. I may go into mine once or twice a season, but certainly don't consider using it as a summer swimming pool. Lots of bacteria in a pond, good and bad.

I have a well and I used to dump all water out for about 4 years. The koi loved it. Haven't done it in many years.
