      Bekko or Utsuri?

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum but have been keeping koi for around 10 years. Last year was my second attempt at breeding and I mated 2 male Bekkos with a female Utsri. Nearly all came out black and white as I expected but I am not sure what they would be classified as. Also are any of them worth growing on or just a waste of pond space? What would you classify them as? They are now roughly 7 months old.

      Thanks for your input!

      I'd say

      1&5 are utsuri
and the rest are bekko... I didn't include the group pic in my count...just individual shots so 1-6....

As far as being worth your time I would say yes... You took the time to breed and cull why not grow few out to see what they turn into... ? That's just my opinion

The group pic seems to have a few nice bekko in it.

Thanks Redman, yes has been hard work reaching to this stage. Since I do have the space I will grow my favourites and find good homes for the others. Thanks again!

Black fry are shiro, if not then bekko. So what type of fry did you cull for?

I was expecting to see both so I only culled deformities or under-grown fry. The problem is as the fry were getting bigger I lost track and now have difficulty determining the utsuri from the bekko. A few do seem to have sumi underneath waiting to come out. They are now 7-8 months. The 2 male bekkos and female utsuri were offspring of my first spawning using a male Matsue Utsuri. Picture attached.

      Welcome to Koiphen rrc

Well, I have to say you have done a really good job of breeding what you wanted! Nice work!

The majority of your babies look to be Bekko to me (and some of them look really nice!)

I know with Showa and Sanke there's the theory that you can confirm if they are Showa or Sanke by looking in their mouth - if the mouth is black it's Showa, if it is white then it is Sanke.

Given that it is now acknowledged that there is in theory a link between Showa & SU, and Sanke & Bekko, I wonder if this theory would also apply?

Because they are from mixed genetics (base colours) you can only choose them by phenotype (how they look now).
Keep to the variety standards and select them by the different variety traits that they exhibit. (Sanke sumi type for Bekko and Showa sumi type for Utsuri)
You have cross overs (those that show a mix of these traits and unless you have a use for them to further breed on with to improve a trait then they are probably not worth hanging on to).
I don't think you have wasted your time. I am sure that you have gained experience with spawning, raising, and informed yourself on how these mixed genetic can develop.
Some of the Bekko's look nice so pick out a couple of the best and grow them on. Do the same for the Usturi.
They look healthy so well done.
