From Isa koi farm, "We think there is no effective way to breed Nishikigoi. I said this because a female Nishikigoi spawns 300,000 to 1,000,000 eggs during spawning season. However only about 100 to a 1,000 Nishikigoi eggs will get through the culling process. Likewise, if a Nishikigoi breeder can produce one ideal Nishikigoi in his life, he is lucky."

Roger I can't agree more with that statement. What makes it even harder if not impossible is that breeders like myself are often starting with 1-5000 fry from a spawn but if each year you get one that is better than last years it's all good.
      Cheers

And I think you are doing well to have that many. Despite many tens of thousands of fry in the first few days, with the high degree of sibling consumption that takes place with my setup and methods, 1000 seems good.

My theory is if there is plenty of live food available for the fry in the first few weeks most will grow quick and leave each other alone. The genuine week ones will then be taken out as the food supply dwindles (that is probably the first cull) and the rest go on to man made food. Pre spawn I spend a lot of time to ensure the fry ponds are well stocked with infusoria and daphnia to achieve quick early growth (it also means I don't have to do much at this stage) but this rarely lasts more than a month and from this point there seem's to be a slowing of growth until I reduce the numbers of fry. It would be nice to grow on a larger percentage of the spawn but small pond space = small numbers of fry.
      Cheers

      G'day all,
Finally sorted the Sanke I plan to grow on and hopefully breed with some in the future. They range in size from 250mm - 300mm except for the Tancho which is the smallest at 150mm.
      Cheers

nice results! when the underlying sumi appears blue, it is a good indication of nice thick black sumi to come. cross your fingers that the tanhco mark holds. The quality of 4 in particular is commendable.

Thank's guy's it is always valuable to know how others view my fish. When seeing them every day sentement and familiarity can get in the way of objectivity so other eye's might find things I miss which I always find most helpful. I am pleased with this bunch and hope they grow well in their larger accomodation. I only kept the Tancho because it was the only one(I think the Hi will not last) but it may make a nice bekko.
      Cheers

In Pic #5, are the gills curled out on this koi? Its hard to tell. The quality of all of them is very nice though. Great breeding effort.

Nice going Wombat. I like the third and fourth ones most.

Also, congratulations on your show winners, especially the little sanke and the two big asagis.

They are looking really good Wombat!

Although not the best body out of the bunch and the gin rin might be a bit weak, I like #3 - I'd be pretty happy to see how that one develops! (It is gin rin, right? )

And although #4 is a 'red-head' it looks pretty darn good! Mind you, it does look to have white lips... so it really could be very good!

Thank's Matt24 I had a lot of fun with the virtual show it was very well organised and all participants put up fantastic koi. The big chalange was getting reasonable photo's it took a long time and those I posted are the best of a bad bunch. The show did make me look long and hard at all my fish and I have learned from this experience which I guess is what it's all about.
Thank's Bunyip I think these fish will be a good base for my future Sanke breeding program. There is no Gin in this line (at least back to their grand parents) but they all have a pearly glow about them when seen from the right angle and looks quite nice in the natural sun light. The hi on the 4th fish finishes just below eye level. I am not a fan of this koi's pattern but it is the larges of them all and I'm expecting it will grow very large.
      Cheers
