So you think you want a greenhouse...

Yesterday I had to go on a business appointment, leaving at 2 pm. At 1:45 my oldest son called me and asked if I knew that the plastic on one of the sections had been torn off by the winds. I had been out there about an hour earlier, built a fire in the stove and checked everything out, since I knew we were having wind gusts up to 45mph and the temps were going to drop down to 25*. All was fine then. Now, I could do nothing and would not be back for 2 hours, and it would be dark, cold and windy when I got back. Thankfully, myson vo;lunteered to help. We started at 5:30 pm and worked until 2:30 am in the frigid wind. We got the one section back on when another section was torn off. It was like a parachute in the wind, difficult to hold most of the time, We finally got it fixed as best we could, but more work will need to be done asap. We saved the plants, but were two cold, tired and frustrated guys when we stopped. It has continually windy all day today, so the rest of the repairs will need to be done next week. The edges of the plastic were torn badly, so the ends could not be nailed up. Will have to work on that later. See what you can run into with a plastic liner on a gh?

I'm glad y'all got the plastic up good enough to save the plants.

I put heavy plastic on the windows of a small shed to keep the snow out during the winter. I was buying new plastic every year because the wind would shred the edges before spring. Hubby had the bright idea to put gorilla tape on the edges. As an obediant wife......I did as I was told. The plastic survived the winter and is now up for the second year.

Yep, the tape cost more than the plastic, but if it lasts more than one year it equals out without the aggrivation of having to repair on a cold windy day.

Heh, seven covers were compromised today, some damaged.

Fortunately the wind dropped after dark, long enough to secure new covers, before the temps dropped below freezing

That is a mean combo, days of blustery storms and severe freezing

Nancy, the bunnies are doing fine.
Sue, I have used duct tape before, but that was before Gorilla tape. The duct tape does not stay on very long. We found some tape I had never seen before, and it was in the section for insulating windows and doors. It is a lot like the greenhouse tape I have bought in the past. It is an indoor/outdoor tape, that can last down to 10* below zero. The local place that sells the gh tape quit carrying it, and I bought the last they had when the gh burned two years ago. It must have been old because it did not hold very well aswhat I had in prior years. The new tape worked great, and continues to hold even with all of the strong wind and gusts we have had since we put it up last night.
Andrew, sorry to hear about your misfortunes as well Glad your winds stopped so you could re-secure them.

I never had any problems with my Stuppy Greenhouse, I replaced the plastic every few years and bought the kind that was supposed to last a few years. I did not loose my top until 10 years after I quit the business and I only lost it because I took the sides down and did not air it up so the wind finally tore it during and bad storm.

Congratulations for getting it fixed in a windstorm, Frank. G H plastic is tough to handle in the wind.

After further investigation in the daylight, I know what the cause of the problem was. We have always nailed the plastic on with roofing nails, using lattice slats nailed on top of the plastic, so the plastic is sandwiched between the greenhouse bards and theslats, thn wrapped around the slats and renailed. To save time, we used a pneumatic brad gun and so the slats were held on with brads, which really have no head. The wind blowing the plasticcause the slats to work loose and pull off. We put the plastic back on in the night using plastic headed roofing nails. They will not allow the slats to work loose like the brads did. Lesson learned.
By the way, The gh type tape I mentioned is made by Frost King and is in the weatherstripping area of the hardware store. It works great!

2"deck screws every 6" through 1"x1.5" wooden strips have tremendous holding power. Hurricane Gustav flattened the minnow greenhouse, but the plastic did not pull out of the wood strips.

That is what we use here to put the greenhouse cover over the pond. Unfortunately the plastic itself didn't make it through the end of last spring. Plans were to put them in the greenhouse this winter..you know that one that burned down last winter? Well it never got a cover put back on. Figured fish were better in the pond with ice than in a pool in an uncovered greenhouse!

Thanks Frank for that tip on the Frost King tape, that will be useful one stormy night. Unlike you having all your eggs in one basket, I have my bets hedged on sixteen covers, lol

Thanks, Snake, Great idea, but that would cost me over $1000. The lattice strips with roofing nails work well, but lattice strips with nail gun brads do not. We have put the plastic back up with lattice strips and the nails that have plastic heads on them for plastic sheeting. Now if it would just quit raining to give me time to get it done....

You should save up and get some of this greenhouse film, it should last much longer!http://growers-inc.com/20re-tx-1200c.html. I have not ordered from them yet, but I plan on ordering my growing trays from them, there prices are much low than FarTek!

I use the greenhouse plastic. It lasts about 5 years most of the time, but has lasted 6. It is rated for 4 years. We got one end fixed this afternoon, and I hope to get the other two fixed tomorrow. Only had about an hour to work on it today. We fixed the worst end though. Going to get very cold again tonight, lows in low 20s.

The plastic is now repaired, and all is backto normal. We had 58* temps as a high today, and it was 82* in the gh! Fantastic news for the plants and for meis that is going to be that warm for the rest of the week!
