Starting water hawthorn is as easy as putting fertile loam in 3" pots, let seed sit in middle and watch it grow. Keeping fish and snails away, and wollah, temps in the 50-70f range would be poifect.

A new lily, hmmm. Fess up!

Dealing with ponds and plants in addition to the normal things of life, we need to keep a smile on our face. Sometimes we have things happen that are not so funny at the time, but are hilarious later, such as slipping and falling in the pond.
A few weeks back, our Boston Terrier was getting a drink out of the pond when someone walking behind her startled her and she fell in the pond. She got out and I dried her off, but it was funny.
So, I want to insert this in this thread. I copied it from Facebook. Some people need to learn to laugh. Others of us just like to laugh more.

Turtlemike's Sunfire is very beautiful. Yes we all need to learn how to laugh & have fun with life. Being serious all of the time would be a very boring life.

The hardy lilies are starting to green up and the submersed leaves are growing larger. In the heated ponds, Some of the tropical lilies are now fully grown!

Zones 6 and higher are probably starting to see some growth or awakening on their hardy lilies. The first two pics were from outside ponds. Many pics like that could be taken as the plants are waking up. The one in the greenhouse was of a Hollandia that I brought into the gh, divided and replanted that I mentioned earlier. It is really doing great.
Glad that your plants are doing well, Gray Cat. Spring will be here soon.

I love to see those lilies greening up!
I am a zone 6a here and I thought it was going to start greening up here very soon, but now we are getting this huge storm! With up to 10-14" of snow, and Friday night it is going to get down to 4f!

As many of you know, the greenhouse is home to a herd of rabbits. I had one, got another, and you know the story. Well, I have divided the penned area into smaller pens so that I could separate the rabbits to keep them from fighting. I did breed them to hopefully have bunnies old enough in time for Easter, not realizing Easter was going to be early this year, not in April. They will barely be old enough to leave mama at that time, but hopefully they will. Dividing the rabbits meant smaller areas so I had to buy feeders and waterers. I was surprised at the differences in prices. The quart bottle waterers (least expensive) were $6.49 at one discount box pet store, and $6.99 at another. Not much difference there, but the farm supply store had the same thing (different brand) for $3.99! That was a big difference. So, I bought all of the waterers they had at the farm supply store, and will get the other two when they come in.

Yesterday afternoon, I checked on some of the tubs and I now have some Mayla and Hollandia hardy water lilies ready to sell. They are not blooming yet, but if planted in warmer weather. they should grow quickly. The plants have nice 4" floating pads. Mayla pic is posted here.
Also, will probably divide one of the lotuses this coming week, as it will be an easy division. Last spring I divided it, and sold most of the tubers. I did not plant up the remaining tubers, but left them in the water in the tub until September. I put some bagged "top soil" (not good to use, too messy) in the pot, and it looked like mulch, but I left it. I did not want to take the chnce of breaking the growing tips. By that time, they were runners. I fertilized it and left it that way. I can see the tubers without digging into dirt soil. It is a "lost tag" lotus. as I am not sure of the name anymore, so I will sell it that way. Sometimes labels get hard to read. I also potted up a few Almost Black hardy lilies. I hope to accomplish more this week. Things are on the grow now, growing a little faster.

Wow! The water lettuce are getting big fast! Also, baby bunnies were born last night! Too early to check them as they are in nest. One doe had babies, but I did not have a nest box in with her so they died. I thought she was due next week.) There are three more supposed to be due next week. Fingers crossed! These are for Easter bunnies. Will deplete number of rabbits kept after Easter!

Today was a nice 56*, but there was a cold wind. The wind could not be felt in the greenhouse, but the sun could, and the temp went up to 80* in there.
I looked at the water lettuce, and the plants had grown. The same one I pictured earlier is pictured here with my hand again, and a measuring stick. In case anyone wants to know, the white stuff on the lettuce is Dipel. It is used to kill China Mark larvae. I dusted last week and since there is no rain in the gh ponds, the Dipel is still on the plants.
I divided the first lotusfor the year. This was a small tuber that I had left in a tub of water from April till August, and since it was still alive, decided to add soil before winter. I put a bag of "top soil" I bought from a store and put it in with the growing tuber. (I do not recommend this "top soil." Very messy if in a pond. It was more like mulch.) The plant survived the winter, and produced tubers.
The last pic is of the tuber that I kept to plant up to keep. It is a small tuber but it has a leaf stem started and a growing tip, so it should survive and grow. It is bigger than what was in the tub last year. The growing tip is on the same side of the pic that the pen point is on.
