      The accidental turtle

i like turtles. But, i have not liked the idea of having them in my ponds. i'm sure there is some ignorance here. my friend premster says they are "terrible predators", but still, bad enough to have "the blue bird" and the mink.

so, saw the turtle in the driveway. called Fred who has always volunteered to rehome turtles for me. he said, "does it have a shiny green shell?" I said, "Yes! how did you know?" "painters are breeding now. it's a good turtle." "good for what?" "it only eats bugs." okay. fred says, "Don't let it bury its eggs in the driveway. pick it up by the tail and relocate it to the garden." okay.

      Turtle Soup

      Ingredients

      1 1/2 pound turtle meat
2 3/4 teaspoon salt, in all
      3/4 teaspoon cayenne, in all
      6 cups water
      1 stick butter
      1/2 cup flour
      1 1/2 cup chopped onions
      2 tablespoons minced shallots
      1/4 cup chopped bell peppers
      1/4 cup chopped celery
      3 bay leaves
      1/2 teaspoon dried leaf thyme
      2 tablespoons minced garlic
      1 cup chopped tomatoes
      1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
      3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
      1/2 cup dry sherry
      1/4 cup chopped parsley
      1/2 cup chopped green onions
4 hard boiled eggs, finely chopped
      2 tablespoons chopped green onions
2 tablespoons chopped hard boiled eggs

      Directions

Put the turtle meat in a large saucepan with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne and the water. Bring to a boil. Skim off any foam that rises to the top. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes. With a slotted spoon transfer the meat to a platter. Cut the meat into 1/2 inch dice and reserve the liquid. In another large sauce pan, combine the butter and flour over medium heat, stirring constantly for 6 to 8 minutes to make a dark roux. Add the onions, shallots, bell peppers and celery. Stir occasionally and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender. Add the bay leaves, thyme and garlic, cook for 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes and the turtle meat . Cook for 5 to 6 minutes stirring occasionally. Add the Worcestershire sauce, the remaining salt and cayenne, the turtle stock (about 6 cups) lemon juice, and sherry. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the parsley, green onions, and eggs and simmer for 45 minutes. Garnish with green onions and chopped eggs.

Picking up snapping turtles by the tail can cause serious damage to their spine. Not recommended
      See above link

"The Northern Virginia Reptile Rescue says, "The best way to safely pick up a snapping turtle is to slide your hand beneath the bottom shell (plastron) and, supporting the plastron and top shell (carapace) lift the turtle straight up. DO NOT lift the turtle by its tail or limbs since this can cause severe irreversible damage to the spine or leg bones. A snow shovel may also be used to GENTLY scoop up the turtle and move it across the road. DO NOT slide the turtle on asphalt since this will cause road rash damage to the plastron." Still, road rash seems better than road smash if that's the choice."

      y'all
I've enjoyed this break from fish farm intensity.
Jeff, thanks for the info on how to catch and handle a snapper. she was an accidental turtle and i hope i didn't hurt her.
I will know better next time ========= and i hope there is no next time!
I went back to where i put that fool and she was gone. this morning fred came and looked all over, and he couldn't find her, either. so she's mobile, anyway. Wayne writes to inform me that there's a male somewhere, and i hope he's got a pad on the other side of the highway.
      rain,
      thanks for the recipe.
i hope i don't need that, either, but ya never know.
thanks, cindy i hope you noticed the shoes.

Wow, you differently avoided getting a serious bite, I've seen snappers that extended their necks out after being held this way and taking chunks of legs from their "handlers" anyways good to see you escaped unscathed, but I would check and make sure your bigger koi don't get eaten up. Even though this turtle can't eat them doesn't mean he won't try and trying could be just as bad!!!

      Nice tread btw!!

      Updated Turtle Pix

      Hi, turtle fanciers!
To recap: This turtle wandered up my driveway and was hanging out there trying to lay eggs, i think. i phoned my friend Fred who mistakenly identified the turtle as a "painter" from my description of shiny green, and that's why, on his directions, i picked it up by the tail and released it in the garden.

Update: later in the year, said turtle attempted to get into the 300,000 gallon tosai pond -- which had been netted by then. And so this turtle was recaptured and relocated!

I enjoyed the experience in retrospect~
No turtles allowed in my pond.

From my recollections, I think snappers never leave the water except for females coming out to lay eggs. The female can travel quite a long ways if there is no good spot next to their normal pond. I think the only exceptions might be if their pond drys up and and they have to find a new one.
I would think a snapper would be the last kind of turtle you would want in a koi pond...
