      Red Eared Slider issue..

Woke up this morning with one of my 2 sliders with a fish head in its mouth. That's all that was left.
Has anyone had sliders kill one of their Koi before?
I used to brag the sliders and koi seemed happy together..guess not.
I DO NOT believe the fish died on its own and then they just had dinner.
I am afraid it will happen again. They have a taste for it now..ya know?

One I received from my sons teacher. It was raised in a pond and always come up to eat with the fish. The other is young and came from the pet store (felt bad for him being in a tank) but never quite got the eating fish food with the fish. Saw her rarely at feeding time. I am pretty sure the little one did it. It was the one that was eating when I discovered it. Had this one for about 6 months.

I'd give the turtle the benefit of the doubt, if he has usually been a peaceful pal of the fish, it could be some accident or predator caused the fish casualty and well, turtles will peck at a dead fish

I agree with Andrew to giving the turtle the benefit of the doubt. We would love to see pics of your turles, pond & fish.

I hadn't thought of putting a turtle in the pond before. Is that not a risk for a hole in the liner as they get bigger? Also with a deeper pond, how do you create a platform for them to sun on?

My turtles have a platform. I am going to let it ride and see what happens before she gets re-homed. If it was one of my favorite fish, this would be a different story.

I have had a water turtle for about 8 years now. Got it when it was the size of a 50 cent piece. I never thought to keep fish with it, till it didn't eat a couple of feeder fish and they grew big. The fish and the turtle lived together for a good 3 years until the filter died while on vacation. Came home to a nasty tank and dead fish.
We ended up replacing the fish with 2 koi. In a years time the tank got crowded, so we built a pond. For the platform I used Cinder Blocks, stacked them in a square and glued some flagstone to the top. I have never seen the turtle use the platform I made, however he love to get up on top of they hyacin and sun himself there. You can always make a floating dock type thing that they will use.
As far as the liner, I used 45mm liner with a prelayer. I have no worries of the turtle puncturing the liner.

      Hope this helps.

We had to build a seperate pond for our two RES. THey wanted to snack on the smaller koi, and one of the larger koi is permanently disfigured from part of his gill cover getting a bite taken out of it. That missing section is growing with him, and it really is ugly. Keep them seperate. I learned the hard way.

A friend of mine had a large fish aquarium with a turtle in it. I don’t know what type of turtle he had, but it was about the same size as most of the fish. He started to notice fish missing and thought they were jumping out, but couldn’t find them. Then he actually saw the turtle grab a fish

I have 5 RES with my 50+ koi (all sizes) in my pond and all seem to peacefully co-exist quite nicely for years now. I did have one non RES black turtle with a thick stubby tail, and he would torture the smaller RES. He had to be returned to the pound where I have always adopted my turtles from for only $5.

Turtles are predatory animals in the wild eating live fish, and various plant materials. No matter how long they have lived with fish trouble free, they can always revert back to how they are supposed to eat, and attack fish.

My Diamondback Terrapins peacefully co-exist with a few mutt koi, but that is only because the koi are faster than them.

Do not be surprised if you lose koi because of a turtle.

That is why you won't find many koi keepers that keep turtles with their fish. Too much of a risk.

I have 4 RES for years in my Koi pond about 40 koi and hundreds of African Cichlids. If anything the koi torment the turtles during feeding and the koi NEVER fight back. That being said if I happen to have a dead Koi every couple years or dead Cichlids every couple of months the RES will eat them

I've always had turtles (western Painted) living with fish and frogs in my ponds. Most of the time they coexist pretty peacefully, but sometimes things don't always go a smoothly as we might hope. A turtle will eat a small fish about as readily as a koi will swallow a little tadpole. All of them will try and swallow your finger if they somehow get the idea that it's food. If my turtles ate too many of my fish, I'd just get more fish, but as it stand I have too many fish already.
      I must have lazy turtles.

I would love to have turtles in my pond, but I had one get held down by the suction from the bottom drain and drown. My whole project is going doubly slow now that DH has passed. but it's going. Hope to get streambed and waterfall finished this year and that will include a bog garden and hopefully turtle habitat.
I put feeder goldfish with them in their pool, they chase them and occasional catch a little one, they are death on polywogs, but I have never seen them go after the bigger goldies.
