      Welcome to the board!

Definitely needs to be a little deeper, ideally at least 3 ft. How will you keep the livestock out?

The largest this pond could be is about 2500 gallons. With good filtration, it would support about 10 fish. As a mud pond with no filtration, I am not sure you will be able to keep 3 fish healthy. The advantage of a mud pond is that it does not have filtration, but it is large enough to take care of the waste.

The addition of sodium bentonite clay is used to waterproof the soil. If the soil coming out of the site is waterproof, or the water table is high enough to keep the pond full, then that is an expense that you would not need to have. If the soil is a well draining sand, sand/gravel, or silt then most likely you would need to use the sodium bentonite, mixed into the soil to provide that waterproof membrane. Calcium bentonite is good in liner ponds but it does not provide the waterproofing. Sodium Bentonite will swell, up to 20 times, filling any pores between soil grains. Calcium bentonite does not swell.

Narrow and long is easier to maintain and harvest. When it comes to harvesting can you pump the water out to somewhere else?
