      Duck weed problem

      Hello everyone,
I wanted to know if anyone out there has any remedies to get rid of duck weed. It got introduced to my pond several years ago hitchhiking in some other pond water plants given to me by a friend. This year though, the duck weed has taken over my pond the whole pond is covered with it. I have read that koi are supposed to eat it but for some reason it does not look like my koi have the taste for it. Scooping it out with a net is time consuming and a big pain, so any other solutions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance for any answers to this problem.

I throw tons of it in my pond and the fish eat it like candy. I usually grow it just too feed the fish during the summer but did not grow any this year,

Yes they sure do. They eat all the jungal val I will let them have too. They eat it like candy. I know I have seen others post that they threw handfulls of duck weed to their fish too. Did you see the pic I posted that time when the fish were almost all the way out of the pond grazing on moneywort or creeping Jenny.

Maybe the koi are to well fed or it is not duckweed. Any pictures of it raider?
My koi eat it and we used to sell it at the pet shop to many fancy gold fish breeders that fed it to the goldfish.

What about salting your pond, would that kill it?
My koi also loved it, and with the old pond we would grow it in the upper pond, then scoop some up and bring it to the lower pond for the fish...now it would all just end up in the skimmer, so I don't have it anymore.

I usually grow it for my goldies, but also didn't this year. It's cold enough here that the stuff is kind of hard to grow without a greenhouse. I have tons of azolla tho, which the goldfish don't like. The goldfish eat the heck out of the duckweed, they love it.

I used to have duckweed in my pond when I didn't have a skimmer. When the fish stopped eating during the winter, the duckweed would keep growing, until there's a nice 2" thick later in the spring. The problem is the bottom layer starts to rot and smell, so the koi wouldn't touch it until I thin it out and net up the rotten portions. Once I do that, they start feeding on the duckweed along with fish food.

The problem with duckweed is that in a hot summer, depending on fish load and pond surface area, they may still grow faster than the fish can consume.

My koi have always eaten duckweed. I have to keep it in a plant pond so I will have enough to give them once in a while. Duckweed is reported to be very high in protein.

And yes I feed my fish, but they still love duckweed and water celery and other plants if they can get them.

It is definitely duck weed that is in the pond. It seems everyone's koi eat duck weed except mine. I just thought there was something I could do besides scooping. Not sure why I have so much this year but it sure took over the pond. Thanks for the input everyone.

My larger koi eat duckweed like crazy....I grow it in my upper pond, it breaks off and goes down the water fall. The koi wait there and eat it. i read a few articles on duckweed, it seems to have a fairly high protein percentage. Somewhere between 22 and 35 percent!!!
