My DIY skimmer for mud pond via airlift.

This probably is not any good for non mud ponds or ponds that already have water flowing through. If like me you just want something to remove pine needles, dust, pollen etc then this could be for you. Here is a video of it in action, sorry for the quality.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JThWzc0X_Q8

It runs off of airlift and can handle changes in water levels of about 15cm. There is more water flowing through the skimmer than what you see exiting in the video given there is an exit under water also. I simply use a skimmer net to reach in and remove the stuff collected on the top inside the skimmer on the water surface. I have two of them placed in the pond in the areas wind blows the stuff floating on the surface. They do a great job for me given my pond shape and are very cheap to run. No worries about a water pump running dry either etc.

I can post a diagram of how its made if anyone is intrested. This is a mk1 of the system and I think it can be improoved upon.

Sorry for my poor diagram but it gives the basic idea of what I have currently.

The main pipework is 110mm, the smaller pipe that comes above the water is 50mm. The hard part to get right is the actual skimmer section. I used a part that would normally go into the ground at the corner of a house to drain water that runs down through guttering from the roof. I luckly found a slightly larger diameter pipe in the same shop. I then used some foam glued to the inside of one end of the large pipe for buoyancy and then finally use some old net over the top of that to catch the debries.

The basic idea for the skimmer section is almost identical to this video and is explained quite well, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7JrZ9dbo7Y.

In the video I posted I'm using a 70 litres per minute airpump and I would say the actual airlift height is about 80cm.

Once I remove them when winter arrives I will get some pictures. I have ideas for improvements.
