What size air pump to aerate bio filter barrel 32" Dia, 4' deep, 175 gallons

Currently I am running Medo 80 in the up flow bio barrel with 5 air stones and air rings with 7 Cf of Cermedia and it's too strong. The purpose is just to add oxygen to the cermedia and just wondering if Medo 45 or smaller will be better.

      Thanks

      Tom

      Tom,

If you are just wanting to add air,,,i think you will be fine with that pump. But it also depends how you are going to add the air. I have a 275 gallon moving bed built from a Matt Mccann design. It has four 7 inch diffusers in it. Matt reccomended atleast 80 litres of air but this was to keep the media rolling. You will need much less.

Why is it too strong? Is it bubbling out of the container? The reason I ask is that I think you're best served with as much air as possible in there since the media is submerged.
Any chance of adding a manifold and sending whatever is too much to another area of filtration? I'm concerned that essentially half the air might not be enough. 7cf of cermedia is no small amount.

According to the cool video in the main forum posted by "monomer" too much air is a waste for bio bugs and I think the I got too much.

I needed another Medo 80 for the BD any way. Right now I got one Medo 80 for two bottom drains at 6.5' deep and that's way too week for 12,000 gallon pond.

I'd agree with you on the bottom drain. I have one 80l Medo on my single bottom drain. Your pond is only slightly shallower than mine so I think you'll like having more air on there.
I'm not disagreeing with the over-aeration and that it might be overkill for the bio bugs. I'm thinking the added air in an upflow filter with a media full of pockets is that it would minimize what is collected/clogging the pockets.

I'll be interested to hear how the change pans out for you.

Btw, I was reading in an old Koi-Bito mag about Bakki media. It was an article written by Mike Snaden.
It seems Momotaro had recommended that he put airstones in the bottom of his settling chamber. That seems completely counterintuitive to what we suggest but maybe it's factored in with the massive turnover rates being run over the Bakki media. I don't know but Mike Snaden seemed to think it was working. I suppose if I ever change my system or build another with a sc and massive water going over the showers I could try it out.

      Marilyn,
For bio, Cermedia is and will be my media of choice from now on. I have been feeding 5 to 7 times per day with no ammonia or nitrite problem. Last year, around this time I had nothing but problems with ammonia and nitrite using the old media which I no longer use in my bio filter. Now I got to work on water clarity or fine filtration for the skimmer circuit.

There you go, put the Medo 80 on your BD and get a LA 45 for the bio filter.
