Exclamation Filtration for 10,000 gallon pond question.

Hi Guys, I have been lurking here for years. I really enjoy everyone's knowledge so I would like to ask a question. I am installing a 10,000 gallon pond on my property in the coming few months and would just like to get some information on filtration for a 10,000 gallon pond. I am not sure which filtration items are needed to purchase. Money is no object, so with that please recommend what you think would work best in your opinion. I dont want any of those home-made 55 gallon carwash can looking ones, just because of the awful look of having those around my property. I appreciate everyone's help.

Not all of those DIY look bad, just need to put work in to hide them a bit. I have seen painted and hidden so well that from 5ft you can't tell the difference between them and the rock waterfall they are built into.

That being said, if you have the money, I would probably look into Zac's airlift system. High upfront costs but low running costs. The bio media works well and the RDF will remove a lot of debris while cleaning itself.

jimfish98, I have looked into that, and have been considering the airlift system. Not sure about the details of that though. Do you have any pics of that? I am having some consultants come next week from the west to give me some ideas on my setup.

Yes, I will have my assistant take photos daily, once the construction starts. This will be sort of replicated after the Playboy mansion grotto. It will be an indoor & outdoor pond, collaborated next to my pool and indoor hot tub that resides inside a man made rock cave. I just want about 15 Jumbo Koi for my families viewing pleasure while enjoying a bottle of red by the pool.

Here is one of his videos of a set up on it. I think he noted the cost in his area to run it for a year being under $200, but you would need to talk to him more about that.

This looks very promising. I am going to let me engineering team know about this. I will keep in touch and thank you for this video. I am still contemplating the size of the pond once they look over the land and area. I may do 20k gallons if possible. I most likely will do 10 feet throughout also.

      Hey Fish,
The Koi Pond is 11'x16'x5' and 6,150 gallons. It was built in July 2007. The pond and waterfall have a Polyurea spray on liner. The pergola is handcrafted of cedar. There are 31 Koi in residence from 29” to 8”.
      The pump house has:
Aquadyne 4.4 bead filter with blower
Emperor Aquatics 80 watt Hi Output UV
Rhino II Bottom Drain with air
      Alita AL 40 air pump
      Cyclone 1 Vortex
      Savio RS020 Skimmer
10,500 GPH Dolphin "Big Mo" BM 10500 Pump for filtration
Artesian Pro AP1-120-C-3 Pump for waterfall
Bakki Showers have a Performance Pro A-1/3-56-C Pump. Crates are Stackpak units by Orbis and sold by US Plastics with Bacteria House ceramic media.
I live just outside Athens Georgia. You are welcome to come see it.

Welcome to the forum. Take a look at this, hopefully it will give you some help understanding the filtration needs for a pond.

Take a look at this pond thread. This is one I designed and did for Todd. He asked the same question, what was the very best He could do. We went with Cetus Sieves off the BDs and skimmers. BD water went to the showers for Bio, and skimmer water went through UVs to bead filters for mech/fines filtration.

Looks amazing Birdman. I will consider you for sure. Would it be possible to have a faux rock waterfall about 20x12 on the back side of the rock wall grotto to hide the filtration equipment? I have allocated 4000 sq/ft inside my sun wing of my house for the indoor portion of the pond. Just not sure if the hottub will be fine so close to the cave and pond incase of splashing.

Anything is possible. The thing to remember about waterfalls is height. Large high waterfalls take really large expensive to run pumps. And in many cases tall waterfalls look out of place. If you have a natural slope for a natural looking creek is one thing, but a big high pile of dirt with a creek starting from the top will really look out of place. And of course it depends on if the pond is going to be natural with a lot of rocks or formal finished off with something like flagstone.

When I was looking for faux waterfall kits, I stumbled on some pool/waterfall designers that were casting some spectacular waterfalls...so ya it can be done. Just look at Disney World, all their water features are cast concrete.

But Birdman is right...you do have to proportion the waterfall to the pond.

If done right, you can build a spectacular stream coming off of a mounded hill. A local landscape supplier has such a display pond. The key was that while not an overall tall mound at 5ft or so, it's a really broad mound. With a lot of very large boulders and plantings, it feels like a wooded mountain stream. 5-6ft or higher mound on 200ft2 of land will look out of place, but not on 2000ft2. It's really cool in that there's a lot of water flow with a number of waterfalls down the stream with some small side pools as it comes down the slope.

Guessing that operation cost is a non factor in this project.
