1/2 wine barrel as a water garden?? Suggestions Please :)

How would you water proof a wine barrel so you could use it for a water garden? I may have enough pond liner left over to use it in but not sure what I would do to hide the liner at the top. Don't want it to be ugly.

I was also going to see if I could cut a round hole on the side to put in a ball valve so I could easily drain it.

      Suggestions?

      They make inserts:

I got exactly the same thing at my local garden center, though.

      That insert is pretty cool.
I was just thinking that the barrel should already be water proofed somehow. It did once hold wine? Rite? Found this raised barrel on Craigslist. Like it a lot.

I think cutting them in half compromises the watertightness of the staves, they get loosened. A whole one would probably still hold liquid.

That makes sense. I do have enough pond liner but will have to stick two pieces together. I have liner tape left over.

Do you live in Tracy? If you go to Lowes or Ace Hardware they have them for $29 and you won't have to drive far to get them.

I was just at ace today...didn't even look. I like the elevated ones but doubt I could figure out how to do it myself.

I would try and do a bottom drain... I am using the ones I got for a planter that has our Pergola supports going through the middle of it. Cutting a hole in the center was pretty easy... Just be careful to not remove the bands on the sides.

I am going to go to Home Depot and look at the fiber glass ones they have. Since it wont be elevated. Would have to do threw the side of it for a drain I think.

Don't cut any holes in it quite yet!
Wine barrels are only watertight when there full of water(or wine). When they dry out they the wood shrinks, and when there wet they swell! So what you need to do is sink it in a pond or container of water, and keep it in there for about three days. Then pull it out(it will be much heaver), and fill it with water, and it should be watertight!

Costco has a really nice larger size plastic/poly whiskey barrel look alike for $20. If I had the room to squeeze it in somewhere I'd have bought one or two. Good luck with your project.

When I was a teenager & growing my first lilies I'd line a wood barrel with a black garbage bag & staple it on. There usually would be a small hole, enough of a weep to keep the barrel damp so it wouldn't fall apart. The metal ring on the bottom does leave a rust mark on the patio though.

I put a piece of liner in and fill close to top with water, smooth liner, then take a utility knife and cut off unwanted liner. I then use heavy hardware tacks to fasten in place, i pushed them in by hand and they're not budging. Don't go too thin with the container, the water temps go wild. Whiskey barrels work great for me. They also sell giant resin flower pot looking containers which are a little wider for tropicals or odoratas.

I have two as water gardens. Once they get wet again they don't leak. I have plants and goldfish in both of them. Have had them for years. One I emptied and it dried out, it took a seek of so if constant filling to get all the wood wet so it didn't leak anymore

I built a goldfish pond out of 7 wine barrels about 8 years ago. They were stained from red wine and I didn't wash or coat or seal or anything. There were 4" PVC tunnels between the barrels on the lower level, so the goldfish could swim from tank to tank. I sealed the pipes in place with some kind of marine sealant, I can't remember now exactly what it was. The whole thing lasted about a year until the dry end of the staves started shrinking too much in the summer heat, and then the water seepage really got out of hand.

What is the nice lily for the top barrel? The lower one is James Brydon, right?
