      bug zapper=free koi food

I thought this title would get your attention.

I have been thinking about getting a bug zapper to go over my pond for a number of years, I finally did it today. After all bugs are free koi food, why not utilize it?

Does anyone keep a bug zapper over their pond?

      Are all bugs nutricious?

Should I be concerned about any that are poisonous?

Perhaps "fried" by the bug zapper is not as good for them?

Should I worry about any that may have been exposed to pesticides from local fields?

Also I do need to figure out how to attach it to the greenhouse frame over my pond so there is absolutely no way it can fall into the pond and still be plugged in.

This bug zapper turns on at dusk and off at dawn. Will I kill many beneficial bugs running it just at night?

Will my koi stay up all night looking for bugs and not rest?

Will they sleep and my filters get clogged up with bugs?

most of the bugs that are toxic to people, and probably koi, cannot fly with the exception on some species of beatle. i would definately do a quick internet search on toxic insects in your are to be safe. Some examples of insects that you can find anywhere that are toxic include grasshoppers, blister beatles, and bees/wasps.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I think I'll try it. When I turn my lights on at night, the bugs come in and some of them hit the lights and fall in. The koi go crazy for it.

My catfish loves June Bugs, although they fly in on their own. A couple months ago, we had a 'hatch' of may flies (I think) that were so thick you couldn't hardly walk across the yard without getting a faceful. They would light upon the surface of the water and the goldies and koi gobbled them up. I think the only reason I wouldn't put up a bug zapper is I don't know about toxic ones and it would make pond look messier until the skimmer got them.

Interesting idea...really don't know if it's a good idea or not. I'm thinking most bugs are protein which is a good thing. My koi snatch low flying bugs all the time, but those are still live. I worry about them catching a bee and getting stung...but fried? Sounds like good BBQ to me.

I dont have a bug zapper but did fix a light over the water to attract some late night snacks.

All the koi hang around that light all night waiting for there chance for a big ol fat bug to land on the water. Looks like pirana feeding when it happens.

I'd worry that the zapper would end up in the pond, and I'd end up with BBQ koi.

Besides, if I throw anything in that doesn't look like a pellet, they look at me like I just through the cat in.
