      Koi treatment advice wanted.

Just returned from looking at a Koi owned by a friend. Seems the fish has somehow managed to damage his side. I'm trying to sort out the best course of action. The fish has some "skin" hanging from the tear. (I would say the affected area is about the size of a quarter.) My question is should the fish be put to sleep and this small patch of skin removed prior to treatment begginning, or would you leave it ?

I plan to place the fish in a hospital tank after a dip in Tricide-Neo.

      Your thoughts....
      Thank-You

Mike - I was waiting for one of the fish experts to answer.

Me? I'd treat like a person. The area that is still attached has a blood supply so I wouldn't clip it. I'd treat with salted water and antibiotic food and hopefully as it heals it'll dry up and fall off.

      Just my one cent.

      Mike,

Id but the koi in anasthetic and clean the skin off, then clean the wound and make sure there are no dead scales to stop the wound from healing, You really do need to give it antibiotics. If needed then out in a seperate tank, if you have good water and good temp the main pond should help it just as much, If using antibiotic food remember it will really hit your filters hard! It sounds like a knock, thats all, get it quick and it wont be a major thing.

Tim? You'd cut the attached piece off?

Cindy, If the skin is lose then yes I would. How would the wound ever heal again, it has to come off.

Tim, thanks. That was my initial recommendation to the fish's owner. That the skin would have to be removed. "If" the Koi's owner decides to have me do it, i'll dip with Tricide Neo then QT in 3% salt hospital tank before returning back to the pond.
If anyone has any other input i'm very interested in hearing it.
      Thanks,
      Mike

Not necessary but a bit of mercurichrome or iodine wont hurt.
