      Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth?

Does anyone here use Food Grade DE?

I purchased some a week ago, and it arrived yesterday.

I admit, I didn't do much research on it, I just knew it helped kill fleas and bugs.

Found out it can be used for a TON of things! Internal parasite remover for animals/people, detoxer, insulator...

<--- has food grade snake oil for sale

Food grade means you're eatin it? Well if you got parasites that can be killed off by DE then go for it. Mind telling us which parasite you got?
My Food Grade Snake oil does the same thing but it makes you feel like Super Woman

There is a difference in DE, and Food Grade DE. Typical DE (used in swimming pools for example) is toxic and can be deadly. To say that food grade is no different (snake oil), is absurd.

Food Grade DE can be consumed. Will I be consuming it? No. However, I am going to see if it works just as well as people say it does with their animals. Many people put it on their farm animals to keep away pestering bugs. Many feed it to their pets because it kills internal parasites/worms. It is also supposed to help increase appetite, and improve the overall health as it helps to filter the body of toxins.

Other than working on killing fleas... it works on Stink Bugs! Those little buggers are everywhere. I can't wait to finish the war with those guys.

You can get food grade DE at tractor supply for much cheaper than online. I used it my chicken coop and run, it's great for them

How is food grade diatomaceous earth different than "regular" diatomaceous earth? Diatoms are single celled organisms from the sea, composed mostly of silica, which is inert. Unless somehow impurities aren't taken out from the ocean which could cause allergic reactions perhaps (so yes, I could see the difference here). I don't think I would be ingesting diatoms anyway. I have scattered DE around the yard for ants and crickets though, and even from reading the ingredients, it's non-toxic to pets and children. That's really the only reason I use it over typical insecticides because I don't want poisons in the yard, or my pond. The DE works by cutting open the shell of hard-bodied insects and dessicates them. Doesn't work by toxicity.

I know it doesn't work by toxicity to insects, but typical DE is toxic to people/animals... has something to do with the silica content.

I've read the DE works by yes, cutting into the hard shells, but they dehydrate them. But I am sure there's a few theories out there.

In hard shelled insects it is a mechanical insecticide. Although it does collect moisture, the way it kills insects is by getting between the plates of thier exoskeleton and cutting the connective tissues causing them to "bleed out". I am sure it collects all those fluids also as it can coagulate in addition to being a dehydratetor.

I am wondering if food grade is simply a finer/smaller particulate size so it does not cut or cause lesions inside of animals.

I think this guy has been drinking DE too long, but a relatively good explanation of what DE is:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQn6GSHNzBE

EDIT: I would not ingest it. Interesting comments though. Reduces high blood pressure. Probably lacerating intestines and bleeding out.

He's a retailer/producer of this product so half a grain of salt, also.

I've read on multiple sites about ingesting it. Apparently it's used to make nitroglycerin tablets.

I wasn't trying to cause a war. lol.

Just wondering if anyone else out there uses it.

I'm definitely going to experiment with it's uses. I am all for holistic natural processes.

ain't warring. But I taught health and I feel the need to point out industries that provide absolutely nothing under the guise of improving the health of the buyers.... I call it stealing...my daddy called it "separating from money."

      Hi all:

There is a food grade of Diatomaceous Earth because we use it in the pharmaceutical industry as a filter aid.

Imagine trying to filter mud through cheesecloth - it will quickly clog. If you mix a bunch of sand in with the mud, it will filter much more readily. That's what DE (we usually refer to it as "celite" which is a particular brand name) does. Because the stuff comes into contact with something that will be ingested, it needs to be "food grade." It has more to do with inspection/certification/traceability in most cases, although there are specific high grades of celite for particular applications. As far as ingesting it goes... OUCH!

We usually pay a handful of pennies per pound.

I think if I wanted to injest some kind of "earth" material for better health, I would use Gene's Koi Clay instead.

I use it for my dogs. I put it under beds, around the house for bugs, around gardens etc AND use it to worm - puppies. I dont worm the adults unless they came across something. Always have it on hand but dont always utilize it.

Can put it directly on the dogs as well for fleas, but as mentioned you and them do not want to inhale it.

If you use this on pets how do you keep them from inhaling it?
It gets mixed into their fur , then if they chew them selves the dust
      can get up their nose.
      Right?

I can't figure out which is better for getting rid of fleas.
This dirt or spot on type flea meds. Both would have risks.

But I'm considering getting some to put around the exterior of the house
and see if it wouldn't cure our ant problem.

I am feeding DE to my horses mixed with their morning feed. Also sprinkling it around their stalls. I have seen a drastic reduction in flies. Not sure I would ingest it myself, but there are people on my Equine discussion list that do, and claim it helps with arthritis

I have been using DE for years, and it works great in the garden. It is safe if you breath a little just not a lot.
Eating it is healthy, and will not kill you, if it did we would all be dead! They have been using DE for a long time in all sorts of foods, so you have all eaten plenty over the years, and your not dead! DE will not cut your guts up, and cause you to "bleed out", because once it is wet it is harmless, and is no longer "sharp". I take a tablespoon every morning, and I'm not dead, yet.
