What do you use to fertilize your lotus? I have yellow leaves and must take action immediately.
I have lily tabs, miracle grow, fish emulsion, osmacoat time release and probably some other stuff.
Thanks!

My lotus are separate from the pond. I just sprinkle in some Miracle Grow.
First we have to assume that you do not have salt in the pond. Salt at high enough concentrations will kill most plants.
This not being the case, take them out of the pond and get some regular fertilizer from the store and feed them for a week then rinse them and put them back in the pond.
IF they are first year plants then they don't need much fertilizer and that could be the problem.....I put mine in CLAY and they grow.
We use Miracle Grow for ours. I believe that I read that Perry Slocum did also.
Rebecka adds more when the water in the Lotus tubs clears up, as long as there is algae in the water she figures that the water has enough nutrients.
Ah! Sorry I left this out: The Lotus are in giant tubs in my front sunny gardens, not in the pond.
I'm afraid I jumped the gun before many of these replies came in & on advisement from another - shoved lily tabs in the 'soil'. I listed miracle grow as one of my "on hand" options but...
Well - I hope that's ok for a while at least. I've no experience with lily tabs & have zero idea how long it takes for them to breakdown or be active.
If I switch to Miracle grow - when can I start adding that? I don't want to kill them with too much fert. I've heard people using a piece of pvc to shove down in the muck to get ther Miracle grow in. Is that the common method? Or is adding it to the water itself beneficial?
While I'm at it - I have some aerial leaves. Does that indicate anything? Like - is it possible they might bloom this summer or is that merely a sign of age? This is my first try with lotus. Actually - I'm not well versed on aquatics in general. A newbie for sure.
This is our Momo Botan Lotus, fertilized with Miracle Grow. Rebecka adds the fertilizer to the water. The flower stalk is 38 inches tall from the top of the water. This is the second year for this plant. Last year it put up ariel leaves but no flowers.
Theron - that isn't a bloom getting ready to open sticking up? My last year one from seeds is just now standing up.
Cindy...
LOL!!! That is a picture of this year's Lotus...I am sure!!!

Theron, your Momo Botan is just beautiful. Miracle gro??? Cool.
My Momo Botan looks awful, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Just look at it!
Do you know what's wrong with it? Maybe too much fertilizer? My other lotuses look fine.
Excessive fertilizer and hard water with a high pH can occasionally cause chlorosis in lotus plants. Rainwater relieves chlorosis, as does frequent water changes. (Chlorosis, or severe yellowing of the leaves, is most common with lotus grown in containers.) Add some Muriate of Potash at a tablespoonful dissolved in the water twice a week, that should help.
