      Which one?

Which one is going in the pond? The first fish looks beautiful, but the ki on the head of the second fish doesn't look too solid.
Both fish have even scalation and skin with fukurin coming along nicely.

(Laughing... it's hard to take good pics). How does the head look in person? I also seem to remember reading (Russell Peters, I think...) that the ki on her head should get thicker as she matures.

I see her as being a wee bit chubby behind the head, but it's probably my issue not hers, and will defer to others. Even if I am right, putting her on a diet for a bit will certainly take care of it.

      A real beauty.

      Regards, Eric

I love yellow! If it were my pond the first due to the color, the scalation and fukurin being even. Hard to tell on the first picture, but I think I prefer the shape of the head over the second fish. Can't tell the body shape of the first fish either, but if they are compareable I have to give the nod to the one with the color I like better. Better pics that have each fish from the same angle and in the same position make judging stuff like this easier.

This summer I put one of my hariwake in my indoor QT for a couple of months.. the yellow faded so bad I thought I had ruined the koi.

      Tom

This will become a very nice Yama. The bone structure is very strong. This fish should NOT be placed on a diet! The growth at the shoulders shows she grew quite a bit over this last season. The "hump" behind the head is not too disproportionate to the overall frame and the head should catch up in a few months. The change in color between the two photos has a bit to do with the photos themselves and the exposure rate, but I do think she lightened up in your indoor qt a bit. No worries, she should gain the color back with no problem. Take good care of her, feed her well and keep us posted. I think she's gonna get to over 28" in the next two years.

Thanks Mike for the observation, I will only keep 15 to 17 koi in my 12,000 gallon pond and I think she will be a big girl.

Yeah, this variety does a TOTAL chameleon. I bought one(also Izumiya), and in the pic it was this DEEP golden yellow, I got it and the darn thing looked almost like a platinum Ogon. After a month out in the pond she really started getting better. Then 2 weeks after I showed her she went from a nice yellow to the DEEP to die for golden yellow she was in the sales pic, and I was so psyched. I brought her in for the winter and in 2 weeks inside, she faded back a lot. I put a grow light over the pond hoping it would help, and it has, but not like sunlight. It also helped with the sumi on my kin showa and my hi utsuri.

Oh PS... Can anyone comment on the dull scales, the one most visible is in the second pic just behind the koi's left shoulder, there is also on on the other side a couple more rows back. Mine has a similar flaw, and I have been wondering if it would go away. Is it a formerly popped scale not growing back quite the same, or just some sort of blemish?

I don't think those are flaws. On most Koi you will have soem scales that reflect light a little differently than the rest. I would wager that, if you look at this Koi from the side, you would not notice anything wrong.

Buying this variety at tosai can be a big gamble indeed. Most folks buy what they want to see at maturity, that bright golden yellow. Well, when buying Yamabuki at tosai, the preference should be that very light soft lemon color. This will give you a better chance at maturing with that deep golden color WITHOUT the orange specks showing up. It can/does also depend on the breeder you buy from and the quality of the fish.
