Orlando, i thank you and i will follow your thread when i return home to reliable internet. breeding is an indescribable adventure. i look to three or four years from now when if there are no mishaps, two ki shusui parents produce a high percentage of ki shusui kids. Fingers crossed!

Love the 12 second video, was that koi supposed to go back in the pond?

      Cindy!
Just back from vacay and saw this. Yes! Fish supposed to be returned to pond. He had his own schedule. 12 secs in air was more than enough for him!

Just thinking out loud here but have you considered breaking up the group you spawned this year into two groups to see who's got a better chance to reach your goal. I know that route would add a couple of years to this plan but hear me now, from what I have seen in this year's tosai you have some outstanding examples and that's just by looking at pictures I think you have reached the point of refining your own line that's why I mentioned breaking up the group you spawned last spring, I hope you can understand my way of thinking.

Orlando, thanks very much for your review of my little ones
If I get your meaning, you're saying cull down to the best for the future of my line.
I'm thinking same and am working toward the third generation by 2020 or 2021.
In May, John and I are going to pull the Lower, and I'm going to cull the current 888 keepers (yeah, I know. ) down to 300, split them between the Lower and the Big Ponds to give them enough room. Then, cull again in October. A friend advised me to back-cross some of these kids to their parents, so thinking about that, too.
      Meanwhile, seriously mink-proofing the pond.
      It just started to snow!

Well that's certainly an option I was referring to splitting up the current Oyagoi into two separate groups to see if you can achieve higher grade results while the f2s become old enough to cross back to the parents.

      Oh! Great idea.

      So a refined F2 spawn, you're saying?
I think we can do that in October when we pull the Big and Lower ponds. I would use the three females but only one of the males. I've got some F1s from the same hatch without much ki but still with clean skin at year 5. Maybe swap one or two of them into the mix.
