What a tremendous undertaking. You are doing a fabulous job. That rocky cliff or outcropping is just amazing. I, too, am trying to figure out how best to winter the koi in my mud ponds. I have been putting a pool cover on one end, and I know it does nothing but freeze in place. I'm of the shallow bubbler school of thought. I want to keep those thermal layers. We also had a very long and severe winter here in the north east. I hope that was the worst one for a while. Continued best of luck to you and your wonderful pond.

Winter has come really late this year compared to the last two years. The pond did not get a proper ice cover until earlier this month, thats two months later than in previous years. Its been nice since I have not needed to go and check on the pond so much. We have had alot of rain also and not much snow. I have had to drain water from the pond a couple of times given there is no system for water to overflow. I may have to look into making somthing next year to resolve that.

We have had a major storm that took out many trees and electricity, only one fell in our garden but it was away from the pond thankfully. Many branches and pine needles however were blown from the left standing trees and ended up in the water. It took a good few hours to clean it out.

We lost a koi back in the middle of December. I'm really not sure the cause, I have a feeling it had some stomach problem given the stomach looked bloated. It was one of the smaller ko at only 22cm, it never ate much (even in the summer) so I think it may have had an inherant problem for some time.

Have you tried using a floating heater to keep a hole in the ice? That will allow gases from decaying plants and fish poo to escape the water and help your oxygen levels.

You have done a wonderful job on your pond. Beautiful setting.
Yes, Tallypackrat is correct. If you can, get a pond deicer/floating heater. It will just keep the ice melted around the deicer...not a big open area to loose heat.....IF it is really cold. Then you don't have to take a pot of boiling water out to open your pond. I use a bubbler and a deicer. We get ice cover in the coldest winters from December till March.
(This past winter was the worst and longest in a long time. Because my pond is not real deep, I even cover most of it with sheets of styrofoam insulation. This gets covered with ice and snow. The temperature stays more steady and I have not lost any koi.)

I don't have any recent updated pictures for you guys sorry but I will try and do some.

This year the first health issues of koi have surfaced. Its taken a long time to pin down what the cause but after getting the water tested for heavy metals Its clear their is problem with Zinc levels. We are seeing a reading of 0,019mg/l which on the reading I have done is too high for Koi immune systems.

We also have a Iron reading of 2.7mg/l and Aluminium of 2.2mg/l but I have not found information if these levels are toxic for Koi.

I'm not sure how these metals entered the pond yet (whether accidental or deliberate) but I'm looking into quick ways to mainly reduce the Zinc levels quickly before more Koi die. This reading was done after a 50% water change.

That is sad news. Could it be the source water, since you got these readings after the water change?
If so, I believe there are inline filters you can purchase that will remove some metals.

Hoping this all goes well for you. What you have there is beautiful.
