BIG MYSTERY... koi dissapeared without a trace

i have a little setup for my tiny koi that are like 2 inches long.. but this morning when i went to feed them, my gin rin chagoi was missing!!!

I have a metal grate over the pond, so i have no idea what happened to it.

This is the biggest mystery and i am trippin out!

Only thing i could think of was that it died and my dad took it out before he left for work... and i cant call him right now

blah, i just got him too

A couple of things come to mind. The holes in the grating were larger enough to allow him to jump which is quite common in new fish or he made his way to a settlement chamber or pump. 2" koi are pretty small and can end up in some most unfortunate places.

Sorry to hear you lost him and I hope the mystery gets solved.

Still learning as I go but y'all can call me Marilyn

okay i just called him, he said he didn't do anything and saw it yesterday night. The pond runs on a submersible pump and its too small for him to go through it.. the opening is like 1 cm wide. And the grate is VERY heavy and securely attached. There is no trace of the missing fish anywhere in my backyard and the pond looks untouched. i am counting the fish over and over and looked EVERYwhere in the pond... any ideas guys?

Maybe went thru your bottom drain and is alive and well in your settlement chamber. Happens all the time in our goldfish pond.

Could be be wedged between the pump and pond wall? We had a big bull frog eat some of our little ones. Any possible other preditors with only two legs?

My 9" chagoi hid in the bottom drain and couldn't got out. I had to turn the pump off and he swim out after a while.

I had a fish wedged between a pump and a fold in the liner, too. I would take the pump apart. If possible, could you show us a photo of the grate? it's possible a predator was able to "fish" it out with a paw. A heron can stab and grab, but i would think they would have taken all the fish. Depends on the size/arrangement of the grate holes.

Is it a liner pond that has folds? I had a small koi spend its first week in my pond hidden behind a fold. He would stick his head out for a second and pop right back in. I had to go in the pond and flatten the fold more to keep him out of it.

Sorry about that. You might want to go buy some bird netting from home depot, and put it over the top to prevent jumpers. Can put it under the grate. This way, they bounce off the netting and back in. although, I have heard of fish bouncing out of the netting and back up on top (through the little holes, or the sides)

How many gallons is the pond, and how many fish? sometimes if water parameters are off - ammonia, nitrate, nitrIte, pH - the fish jump, and sadly, some land outside of the pond. Or, if they're new additions, in new surroundings, they might jump too.

      Good luck.
