Very Nice! That's a fish I can truly say is a quality Koi, When they just keep getting better and better each photo. I am going through that learning curve of getting away from buying what looks good when purchased and trying to learn more about what to look for for future. IMO, that fish still has a lot of future left!

I am glad you brought this up because this is what I try to do when I hunt for Koi in Japan. There are many stages in Koi development so understanding what "will become" of a Koi will yield you the best results down the road. You usually can't get what you think a Koi should be when it's young, not if you want it to have any future. Getting what you want in a young Koi usually yields a finished Koi, or a Koi that is close to being finished and, very soon, there is nowhere for it to go but downhill.
What I like about what this Kanno Goshiki shows, is the progress it has made, and that it is still improving. As a Tosai this is a Koi that most would not pick because it didn't really look like a Goshiki. Goshiki are difficult and one of the things I hear the most is that people want clean Beni. This is Beni without any Sumi in it but that isn't always possible when they a young. You can see Sumi in the Beni on this one when I first got it but, as the Beni started to thicken up you can see the changes in the Sumi and how it is cleaning up. The Beni on this Koi will continue to thicken. This isn't a given for any Koi but knowing the breeders characteristics and being able to recognize quality, and how it develops, does help to increase your chances.

Yes, but the Koi in this thread is a Goshiki, which is why I used it as an example. All Koi varieties develop differently but they all have one thing in common. The best usually start out as ugly ducklings and take time to develop so, understanding the breeders bloodlines and knowing quality, are always the best tools when choosing for the future.
