      DIY shade cloth for pergola

In the afternoon the sun really beats down on our patio. So last year I bought a roll of shade cloth from Sams club figuring I'd try to rig something up to help cut down the sun a little.

Here are some pics of what I did.

Okay so it took a year but at least it's done now.

      Shade open.

I also started to install some LED lighting in the pergola.

      How about some details?

I screwed an eye bolt into each end of the pergola and strung some aircraft cable between them. Did this on both sides.

Then drilled a hole on each end of some 1/2" conduit and looped a key ring through the hole and around the aircraft cable. I sewed loops in the shade cloth and slipped the conduit through the loops. No comments on my sewing. I still have to clip the hanging threads.

For the LED lighting I found a great deal on Dealextreme.com for some outdoor waterproof LED lighting. $45 for a 5 meter length with controller.

I can choose from something like 15 different colors, and dim them.

I cut a 1/2" wide x 1/4" deep dado in the cross bars and used silicone caulk to glue the lights into the cross bars. Okay, haven't finished tucking away the wires yet but hopefully soon.

Now that is one cool idea. Great way to put over a pond, too, and take it down, maybe in the winter.

You did a great job and the lights are really
Seems to provide as much shade in the closed position as in the open ... that takes tallent

Rudy woke up early but Peggy stayed in bed untill a little before noon.

      Thanks for the comments everyone.

Busted!! I was hoping nobody would catch on. I took the pics in the morning before the sun actually gets to the patio.

Because the key rings are snap on the setup goes up and comes down REAL quick.

      Greg and Sherry,

      Thanks for sharing. Good job.

I have a pergola and the same shade cloth put up. You can see it was done much poorly than your. One of those days, I'll redo it your way.

This is awesome! Thank you so much for posting your work. I have been trying to figure out how to do the same with our pergola. I do have a couple of questions though. 1) I noticed on other sites, with similar canopies, it says something about pitching it so when it rains it doesn't collect water. Did you do the same? If you did, how. 2) Do you think I can use nylon canopy fabric to do this and would it offer enough shade? I want something waterproof, so we can sit outdoors when it's raining.
