      Auto-fill chlorine filter

      Hi -

I'd like to ensure that my auto-fill can't put chlorinated water into my pond. I am looking at this.

      Any one have any experience?

Looks like there are multiple cartridge options ... there's also a larger size.

That's what I'm using. I recently bought and recieved a new set of test kits, which include chlorine. When I get a chance I'll test the chlorine into and out of my filter cannister. Maybe today.....

You can make your own with a whole house filter from a Home Center with a charcoal cartridge. Get the larger diameter filter for better flow and decreased replacement frequency.

I ordered the 4.5" x 20" Filter which I'm pairing w/ the 2 micron cartridge (rated at 42,000 gallons). Although the .6 micron cartridge is rated at 150,000 I was worried about it being blocked by sediment. At present, I intend to connect the cartidge to a dedicated 3/4" pvc water line that will be controlled by a ball valve. As my pond is roughly 5000 gallons, I intend to set this line to drip into my water fall at a rate of 3 gallons an hour. This will provide for a weekly pond turn over of 10% at a safe and steady rate. This rate will result in running approx. 24,000 gallons of water through the filter each year.

I know that it can be argued that at this rate I don't even need the carbon filter. Nevertheless, a bit of redundancy never hurts -- and I'm willing to spend $70 a year on a new filter to ensure purer water for the pond. In addition, I can always open the ball valve and increase the flow if I desire to add more water without fear of killing the fish. Finally, I should note that a yearly filter change on this model (given my plan to only put about 24,000 gallons a year through the filter) is fairly conservative.

I'll take solace wherever it can be found. Just don't tell me how much I overpaid for the filter!
