A little over a year ago I bought a fish from Mat at Quality...he had brought it to Orlando, I bought it and then he took it back to NJ. This March he brought it back to Orlando for the show and then took it back to NJ, along with another 2 other that I bought...big van rides, let alone the show..very stressful! 3 weeks after he got it back to NJ, he shipped it to me...this required about 26 hours in the bag from the time Mat bagged it, till I got them out. The bag had a 17.5''; a 16'' and 12'' fish in it...they came out looking great even though the water smelled like crap.

They looked great, nothing out of the ordinary...eating....A few days later I did a quick S/S...nothing...should I have poured chemicals in on them?

I don't like to use chemical if I don't have to, I just use salt to calm them down. Perefect example of using salt at the right time: A friend's from Northern California got 15 fish from the same batch but did not use salt yesterday and he called me late that evening saying that all of his fish were almost dead but on the other hand all of my fish were ok after several hours with .3 % salt.

      say it ain't so...

To be fair though, it could mean other bad things about his ponds conditions. Too many unknowns. On the same hand to be fair, good job getting them settled in.

I am not going to enter into this argument, but rather take a look at this discussion from another angle.

      OK, here goes...

[1] All the bacteria, parasites, fungus, and other nasty buggers are life forms.

[2] All life forms emit waste products.

[3] All waste products contain specific chemical signatures.

Now consider this - we have water tests to detect levels of pH, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, and so on. Has there been ANY research into devising water test kits which can detect the waste products that koi pathogens emit? Seems to me this would make proper koi husbandry MUCH easier! Just do a few water tests on your koi in quarantine, and treat only for the specific pathogens that have been detected with the test kit.

Anyone ever hear about such "medical test kits"? Or am I wandering into Science Fiction land?

0.3% salt wouldn't have made that much of a difference, it only minimally helps osmoregulation...there was definitely something else going on with your friends fish.

Utsuri, I don't think that you're in science fiction land in the big medical picture, but close. But its definately well beyound anything that available in the ornamental fish hobby
