      UV Light

My pond is piped from pump to SG filter to waterfall with 2" pvc pipe, the UV light I have is 1 1/4" inlet and outlet. Can I splice this in after the SG filter and use it or should I buy a 2" inlet and outlet UV light?

      Donnie,
My UV was also 1 1/4" and my installer was able to go to a pond/pool supply and by the right unions so that it would 2"...that would be easier I would think than buying a whole new light...

Reducing from 2" down to 1 1/4" and back didnt effect the water flow? Sounds like that would be easier as well as cost effective.

If you are going to use one with the 1 1/4 then you really need to put in the bypass. A bypass is good to have anyway, so that the UV can be taken out of service by shutting off a couple of valves, and with the bypass, some of the water is able to bypass the UV so its restriction may not be an issue. The flow rate through a UV is critical, or the light doesn't have sufficient time to do the kill. depending on the size of the UV in watts and the size of the pond, you may want to upsize anyway.

I will have a bypass and the uv light is 36 watts, the pond is only 1200-1500 gals with 2 55 gal sediment tanks 1 55 gal pre-filter and 1 55 gal SG filter.

Agree, just get an adapter from 2" to 1 1/4".
1 1/4" seems pretty small for a 36w bulb... but like you said, if you can plumb in a bypass, you
can force more through the 1 1/4", or if need be, you can let more by. Mine is a 40w but on a 3500g pond, and it does fine.

Mine are 1 1/2"... I actually thought they were larger! So yours being 1 1/4" isn't
      as unusual as I thought.

Evidently, no one has seen this part of your question, and it's THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of the equation. The answer to this is NO! You need to plumb the UV in after the pump but BEFORE the S/G filter.

But then that raises the question of why not?

Trying to GRAVITY-discharge 2000gph out of 1.25" pipe or 1.25" bottle-neck ... will create a high potential of water back-up & thus overflowing the S&G filter. The pump is pumping at a given rate into the S&G filter ... water then overflows thru the discharge pipe.

      So if the UV's inlet & outlet is 1.25" there's a bottleneck that creates a back-up.

However, if the UV is only part of the outlet circuit, then there's no problem.

I also used my UV on the suction side of the pump, which others say "never" to do. It was easy, and didn't restrict flow to the pump. The pump had a T at the inlet. One side of the T drew water through the UV out of a gravity fed barrel. The other side of the T drew water out of another gravity fed barrel. Any restriction caused by the UV on the one side just made the pump get more water from the other side.

Same principle could work with a UV on a gravity out pipe. Just make sure there's another avenue for the water to take in addition to what's going out the UV.
