What could have been a fatal mistake...

Just a reminder to watch out when filling up the pond. My wife came out to see how clear the water was after starting the S/G filters this week. While she was out there, I turned on the water to top off the pond. Well, she went inside and I went in the front to finish taking down Christmas decorations. A couple hours later I realized that the water was still running. There are no fish in the pond yet so no harm was done, but it was a wake up call to be careful.

What I'm going to do is place a badge by the faucet, so when I fill the pond I will put the badge around my neck as a reminder that the water is going. I hope some folks will do the same to prevent any causalities.

I set my cell phone alarms. Although, from what I heard with the iPhones, those weren't working.

Go to lowes or HD and pick up a sprinkler timer for a lawn. You can set a time limit for them to run. I have one set up to run for 10 min every two days to top off my pond.

I made a rule many years ago that I may not leave the pond when refilling. If I have to do something else, I shut the water off and then come back to finish filling. I get my camera and sit out there and wait until it's done. Makes you take a little time to do nothing.

Austin I have had a pond for 8 years and 2 years ago I was topping the pond off at night before along trip out of town. I got a phone call that distracted me and...I left the water running for two days. My water bill was $900 that month and I lost ALL of my fish. That event broke my heart but caused me to take the time to rebuild my pond since I didnt have to rehome my fish. I always set a timer in my kitchen to go off when filling the pond. Anything can happen to make you forget when we all get busy, The time option at the hose is a good idea, or an autofill device. I have an autofill now but still have not hooked it up. That is on my spring project list. Good luck

I have done that too many times, forget about the water while refilling after backwashing. I have been very fortunate not to have lost any fish. After the last forgetfulness Rebecca bought me a kitchen timer that I clip onto my belt. So far I haven't forgotten.

Had a chuckle when I read this, as it reminded me of an "incident" when I was a kid cleaning out my mouse cages- I kept the boys and girls separated but chucked them all into one cage while I cleaned out the other- just for a couple of minutes you understand. And my Dad started yelling for me to get out to the car as we had a long drive to visit my grandmother for the weekend. The boy mice and the girl mice spent the weekend together, and twenty one days later I had ninety six new mice to build cages for

We're not on town water here and rely on pumps. The main switch is on a wall clearly visible from my bedroom window, and the electrician friend who does a lot of our electrical work has promised to install a light running off the pump switch next time he's here. That way if I do leave the pump on I'll notice when it gets dark- that's the plan anyway JayInOz

Russell's idea of the carbon filter is the only way to go for people on city water. I use auto fills,or float valves on all my ponds so when I back flush a filter, the auto fill opens automatically and closes automatically when the pond is full. No room for human error.

Austin I still have Koi you can have when you want them They keep changing my days off and I am never off on weekends anyway. Right now there is a layer of Ice over the top of the tanks anyway. You might want to wait until spring or if you notice any nice days coming up in the weather give me a shout and we will see if we can get together,

I left my water hose running in the pond when some very knowing Koi people picked me up for a trip to Tennessee and what was funny we were all at the pond and saw I did not turn the water off. Lucky my pond is 12000 gallons and by the time my dad found it a day and a half later my pond was clear as it has ever been and the fish were still alive. It cost me a couple of hundred on my water bill but at least the fish were alive,

Like Russel I use charcoal. Just pick up one of the large whole house filter canisters and put in a charcoal filter. Worries are gone. Get yourself a 1x3/4 pvc bushing and a 3/4" x female hose coupler and good to go.

These are very cheap and very reliable. The work great if you have your pumps below ground level too. I don't know why people don't use them more.
From a plumbing family, we intall them in garages, basements, smitty pans ( that is the pan your water heater sits in)
any place else where water might be a problem.
All you have to do is put the sensor at the "full" level in your pond. When it gets wets the alarm sounds.

yes as long as there is water movement.... I do not have chloramines, I have well water and that can kill them just as sure as chlorine if there isn't water movement to put O2 in the water
