      settlement chamber pond??

I have a 2000g peanut shape pond. I was thinking, instead of adding a settlement chamber barrel, can I build a 4ft by 4ft by 4ft pond next to the main pond to act as a settlement chamber? Has anyone done this and how did you go about doing constructing it? Is this a better route?

My first thought...it would be easier to just put in a square tote for settlement (250-300 gals). Then add the little pond after as a plant bog to help hide it. You will need to drain the SC easily or sump it out on a weekly basis. I can't see going to all that trouble to in effect build a mini pond.

then I would have to purchase a tote. I already have extra liner for the sc pond. What would all the trouble be? I just dig a 4 by4 by 4 and cover liner over it, right? When I want to clean the sc pond, I just stick a sump pump in the pond and pump out all the crud. The two bd and no niche skimmer would go to the sc pond? How do i separate the crud so that the pump inlet doesn't suck up all the fish poo floating around the sc pond? Would building a sc pond work?

I would put a drain in the bottom at least....

And then a static prefilter on the pump intake to catch all the debris before it goes into the pump...

at 4 x 4 x 4 you should have almost 500 gallons settlement. A rule of thumb for passive settlement (no prefilter or screen or mechanical filter on the intake) is the size of the sc needs to be 10% of your flow rate thru the pump. So if you are flowing 5,000 gph or less you should be good to go. If you flow more than that then you will definitly want some sort of prefilter.

I have a 4x4x2 mini pond/bog without a bottom drain. It's not a SC and I only have to sump pump it out a couple times a year an it's a PITA. I have two other "waste" barrels that need to be pumped/sumped out every week. I have 3 or 4 sump pumps and only one working. These weren't cheapo pumps. Seems they need frequent maintenance. Now, if you don't put anything in this SC pond, then sumping it out might not be a problem as long as you can keep your pump running. It's not a big problem if I can't sump out the waste barrels. The stuff is out of the system. But in your case, you would HAVE to get the crap out of it every week with your water changes. I just prefer and recommend a BD in any SC.

how do I add a prefilter to the pump intake? If I decide not to put any prefilter, wouldn't the crud that is being settle down get pump back up to the pump intake? I would like to add a bd to the sc pond but no more space to dig. I just have enough to dig the sc pond. A sump pump would work, correct?

if you build the 4 by 4 by for settlement chamber, there is a terrific design used by Burt Ballou that employs brushes to knock solids out of the water and has a bottom drain concept to collect solids for easy removal. part of the key is to slow water flow down through the chamber to give solids time to settle out. it also works better if pond effluent passes from the pond to the settlement chamber and then to the pump. this keeps fish waste large and easy to capture rather than grinding it up first in the pump.

It's not how it's made as much as how the piping is configured and the size that makes a settlements chamber work. Your idea would work just fine. Just run your BD pipes into it 1/3 of the way up. You can use good ole Pipe Boots for this. Then put some kind of micro screen or static pre filter on the outlet pipe. If you have a down hill slope where you can drain it then put a 3" drain in the bottom, or like you said, use a trash pump to pump it out.

burt turned a swimming pool into a koi pond, and he added this settlement chamber as his primary mechanical filtration that feeds into his biofilter.

I would agree with Birdman, it should work fine. Personally I would def slope the bottom towards a BD......much easier cleaning. I'm not so sure about routing the skimmer...it picks up "floaties" which is the oposite of a settling tank? The concept of the settling is to settle out the solids. A prefilter for the chamber is as easy as a 5 gallon bucket or a larger barrel that has holes that allows the water to seep in through a mech media that catches any xtra deris that didn't settle. Then pipe it so the clean water is skimmed out to the pump. There are some good write ups on it. I think Kent has a thread that could give you some ideas.

when i connect the two 3inch bd together with a y and run the single 3inch line up th sc, does the line have to go right in the bottom center of the sc? Can the line go anywhere in the bottom? Also, when I do a pipe boot and attach a knife valve (bd line going to vortex), do I place a elbow horizontally facing the adjacent wall to create a vortex like current or just place the knife valve and be done with it?

Instead of using a sump pump to clean the vortex, would a muck vac work better?
