      Andy,
I do believe this is what Steve (Pearlharborday) was talking about. During a hard rain water was entering from above/sideways into the actual motor windings and shorting out that way. How can this be prevented without building a weather proof covering over the pump?

and believe it or not Zac,,,our baldor motors had a solid over size fan gaurd...that sat about 1/4" over the sides of the motor ,,,air was drawn threw the sides..............but our typically "sideways rain "summer thunder showers did the motor in ...in no time flat......................the only way that this motor could work with out a good size " mostly enclosed "cover over it .....would be mount it externally horizontal...........now that poses the question...........how much more lift or head does that impose on the pump ,when returning to the pond..........is there a significant loss of water flow??????? how is it mounted to a filter sump??? is there a mounting kit available commercially??? how much does the mounting kit cost???or is the mounting a DIY project?????

some people like DIY stuff others don't!!!! alot of installers and pond contractors do not like retrfitting things or DIY items...........they don't want the liability risks.......if it isn't a commercially available item that just requires assembly ,,,many pond contractor/installers will have nothing to do with it........

"No towers, showers, falls, beads or sand and gravel filters." Most of that's true. Beads are doable, we will just have to build them differently. The others will have limitations.

Retrofits will be a problem as few ponds are designed to eliminate pipe friction but a good many do have gravity BDs & skimmers so the remaining filter system may be worth modifying.

New ponds will need an entirely different design but that's not a problem for some. Once these systems catch on there will be plenty of system design help all around us just as there is now.

Without the extra power to overcome poor system design, we won't see the inexperienced dealer jumping on board and that's a good thing.

This compared to an airlift? Who cares. They are both improvements that I'm exited about and both will have their advantages for us to ponder

You're not new to innovation so you know there will be lots of nay sayers. You will get lots of PR from interested DIY folks if you try to cater to them a little and these boards as well.

Talk to Kent Wallace. He is one installer who has been looking into developing his own propeller pump and you two might be able to work together. He's an excellent contractor to design the system to go with this and already works nationally with pond installers who will work with him to install these. If you think outside the box you will enjoy him.

I'm presently interested in airlift thinking for now but this has every bit of similar potential.

      Nice going!

      Rich,

Thanks for your reply. Actually these efficient units can do nice two foot water falls. The main reason they are not good for much higher is because of a lack of horse
power. Axial flow design can pump with high head. A half horse or one horse motors with the right impeller with three and four inch in and out. I now can move lots of
water up and sideways. Higher head and flow models will be available soon.

Here is some photos of the horizontal model. The flow rate for this four inch one is exactly the same as the horizontal unit with a seal.

      John,
They are available now. Very cool that you redesigned your pond and hopefully it was not to much work. What kind of flow rate
were you looking for? We have a website now www.aquatechmfg.com for some info but still needs more stuff added. You can
also email or call me at andy@aquatechmfg.com or 808 965 9113

      Thanks,
      Andy Williamson

OK? Since andy showed up on the six inch airlift thread I thought I'd "bump" this one forward as well.
Andy. can you find us anyone anyone of us would know that is using your axial pumps" and could you send me a PM with the price for some of the units?

I tried to contact him and the company about drum filters a few months ago. Left emails and several voice messages with no response.

Probably a commercially available seal that you can look up yourself or have any good motor/pump rebuild shop replace for you. Many pool companies will rebuild pumps at a reasonable cost. Carefully push the seal out and look for numbers if no numbers measure the OD (outside diameter) of the hole and then the OD of the shaft. This will be the OD and ID of the seal. Many different sources to look up seals on the internet.

I doubt you can prime a propeller pump. These pumps are very low pressure but exceptionally high flow. To date, they are probably the most efficient pump for ponds designed to use them and they seem to have better 'lift' than airlifts.
There are a few members of this forum who have experience with propeller pumps.
