      yamadori Dug Mountain hemlocks

From the craigy mountain tops of van Couver island, british columbia, canada.

One lends itself toward a bunjin or literati style, the other more free form Myogi.

It will be awhile before i begin to work on them...or as they say today....involve them in a "make-over".

Just thought you'd like to see what I'm starting with. I had a tough time deciding which one to get so got them both...

sharon at bonsai nw brought them back over the boarder. this fall she'll go back to pick up some lierati style shore pines. I volunteer there every wedneday to learn and get to unload the van when she comes back Thursdays I volunteer at Pacific Rim Bonsai collection at weyerhauser. The curator there shares a lot of learning that i can use, plus he is one of my japanese trained teachers.

well, I honestly can't say i am happy with how my instructor designed the tree. It was painful for me to follow his design. Maybe i need to be able to say that I would like another option as i don't care for this one. Your opinion/thoughts?
The first pic I posted to show the wide deep Gin
the second photo shows a cloth that is kept damp to help with bark (existing) repair.

the second tree I just started on, like his design ok but have lots of work to get it there.

Not familiar with the growth pattern of the tree therefore I'm in no position to judge. My personal feeling; it seems a little drastic. The tree has become very high with respect to width.......some of the lower desity is lost?....

yep appreciate your thoughts. Kinda like koi patterns, not everyone likes the same one and then you start adding rules about pattern etc and nothing seems to fill the bill. I'm hopeful that by protecting the lower trunk till it heals I can put it in a fancy looking pot and sell it next summer in the club's auction. like I said, I learned a good lesson. Shame cause the instructor put a lot of time into weakening the dead portion with a tiny saw and then putting a bend into the deadwood. Then he went back with a torch and burnt off the loose chards. Interesting hobby

Dick, I love what he did! the dead side shadows the live side like a dance.
      life and death.

if you don't care for it you can bring it down south in the fall!

kinda like koi patterns, heh? ( to be honest it's starting to grow on me now) BUT I appreciate your comments and think you hit the nail on the head in your analogy.

Wednesday a good friend that owns bonsai NW is coming back from Wyoming, where he was digging Juniper, white and ponderosa pine to sell at his business. I'll be there to help him uinload if all goes right. Worst then being at a Koi dealer's when a shipment comes in.

      Lol! thanks meg....

I did not see anything i couldn't live without. If I had seen one i could have tagged it and waited a year to ensure it was gonna make the transplant.
