what do you have most readily available? Feather rock is lighter, lava rock usually more readily available and cheaper. Lighter weight can be a factor for some.
same basic bio filtration capacity. lava rock - it's red ... reallllly red. If you use it - wash it off extremely well before adding it to your filters. Then - run your filters dumping the water to a garden bed or sump or something to get as much red dust as possible off the rocks before feeding the water to the pond.

Feather rock was recommended to me but if you find it, you'll have to break it up into smaller pieces. I used a mallet and a chisel to do it, as well as a small masonry hand saw. It's a pain to do, to me, but some don't mind an at least it's done, now. You could also cut it with a masonry saw of some sort. It is said, by some, to have better filtration properties than regular lava rock because it's a lot lighter weight and more porous. I just hope it'll last for a few years. I don't know the life of it when used as a filter media. Maybe someone will comment on how to clean it when it needs it, etc.

Feather rock is much more porous, therefore better. But depending on availability and cost, lava rock is a good choice also.
