      external pump shelter

What's the best way to protect an external pump exposed to the elements including snow in the winter. No room for pump house or pump pit. Can build something small to house the pump.

For my air pump, we (hubby) took a big white bucket, turned it upside down, trimmed out a place for the cord and put a big rock on it.

      Above grade?
Sometimes you can find an outdoor patio-style plastic storage bench or "deck box".

The critical point is to have PLENTY of ventilation in which you can add numerous veloured grates.

Did I mention plenty of ventilation?

Maybe find a storage container/box that would fit upside down over the pump and removed some of the ends to piping and ventilation. Could build out of wood, a U-shaped canopy that you could set over the pump.

Anything, as long as it allows air to get in and out for cooling. Can be as crude as a laundry basket with vented sides and solid bottom, settling over the pump.

also make sure the pump is not setting in a low spot were water could collect and flood the pump resulting in possibly electric shocking you along with destroying pump of course.

if you had a filter pit. then most likely you would have a sump in the bottom of the filter pit, and you could just place a submersable trash pump on a float switch. to keep the filter pit from filling up with water and this keeping all electrical stuff not just the pump dry. and all you would have to do is put some sort of cover over the top of pump so rain would drop right down on pump.

but with a pump vault. as you are wanting, the need to make sure the vault itself can't not flood and in that also flood the pump. needs to be taken into account.

and as all others said, make sure there is good ventilation. pumps create alot of heat. and you need to allow the warm air to rise out, and cooler air to come in low in the container.

Good thread. I have a pit with the pump sitting up off the floor. Until I reach a project in the future to put a roof on the pit, I was also curious what people were doing to protect their air/water pumps. I've seen pictures of them exposed to the elements and just didn't think that was a good idea.

      Thanks to the OP.

I found this deck box at Target. It has vented sides with a solid top and it also looks nice. We can a lot of snow here so I want to make sure my pump doesn't get buried in the winter.

so how do external pump do out in the rain and snow? I intend using some sort of cover and i'll make sure that it's raised up off of the ground.
