      repotting lotus,

Do lotus need to be broken apart and the individual tubers potted up every year, or is it okay to just let them go once they start putting up new pads in the spring?

Once they start putting up new pads it is too late to divide lotus.
Lotus should be divided when dormant.
Are yours putting up pads already?

If you turn a pot on its side, use a gentle spray to rinse soil away from tubers and runners its practical to access tubers and runners in growth and pick intact sections out for division

Especially if they are growing bare root, lol, those can be moved anytime

You can leave outgrown pots of lotus to grow year after year, but will end up with a lot of wrinkly, gnarly old tubers which makes it more difficult to winkle new tubers or runners apart

Be very careful if you attempt to divide now... each piece must have growing tips and if you break those the piece will be no more good.

My lotus were already sending up tips a couple weeks ago when I divided. I was careful to tip the pot on it's side to work the mass out & then rinse the soil off so I could see where to divide. Plenty of tubers & tips. Some did get broken but there were enough remaining to repot plus extras. My pots are small enough that it is best to repot every year especially to fertilize, new soil, & to add steel wool (thanks Joyce!) so the pads stop turning yellow. Now I've got small floating pads on several of my lotus pots. Good luck if you decide to divide.

      Smart choice.
You can always give them a boost of Osmocote fertilizer to get them through the summer.

Not that the steel wool is expensive, but I picked up 3 unopened packs at a garage sale last weekend for 25 cents each. Now I'm stocked up for the next couple of years
