I've gone to Japan 3 times to buy koi and the best koi I've ever gotten was in the spring. I'll be going again this coming spring to buy high quality tosai and nisai. Anyone interested can contact me at koi@bellsouth.net

The only failures are those that stop trying! There is a very thin line between procrastination and delayed gratification. You won't be happy with what you want, if you aren't happy with what you have. It's not what you are looking at, but where you are looking from.
Gene, I am in the process of digging a mud pond, some good tosai from Japan would be
a great way to start it off. I'll be in touch soon....Gene G.

I'll be spneding a week (7 days) in Niigata and I may even visit some of the southern breeders. In order to buy tategoi quality koi I will have to visit many breeders to find the ones that have more tategoi than they have room for in their mud ponds. Which ones those are can change from one year to another, so you have to look.
This will be my fourth trip to Niigata and the first trip I made in the spring of 2006 I was able to buy some of the very high quality tosai and even a few nisai. I've called several of the clients that purchased these koi from me and asked them to email me comments about how those koi developed. So far, everyone I've spoken with were very pleased with how those koi have developed.
Below are the results of one of the tosai Kohaku from Torazo that Bart (Hammerhead) bought from me at 8". He grew it to 27.5" and it recently won grand champion at the Atlanta koi show.
The first couple of days I hit as many breeders as I can to see what they have available and then I'll go back to the ones that offer the best koi for the money.
Breeders that will be on my list and maybe some that are not:
Dainichi
Torazo
Yagenji
Izumiya
Kaneko
Kase
Shintaro
Yamamatsu
Isa Hajime
Marudo
Oya
Shinoda
Shintaro
Kansuke
Hasegawa
Hiroi Seiji
Hiroi/Yozaimon
Marusei
Marusho
Oomo
Otsuka
Nogami
Maruju
Katsumi
Aoki

Gene, how many koi will fit into a box and what kind of average price. I am thinking about talking to our koi club to see they want to use my mudpond for a group growout. Also check out the emergency forum and see if you have any ideas??????
How many per box depends on the size. The higher quality tosai usually run 20-27 and nisai can be from 2-5. I won't know the price until I visit the breeders, but from past experience the tategoi quality tosai will run $200-300, the nisai $600-$1,000 and for a really superb nisai around $2,000. I can also buy very nice tosai that I can sell from $75-$150.

Man, i wish i had deep pockets
I've received some email inquiries about the trip, so I'll post answers here as well.
You get the best price on koi if you give me the money before I leave the US. The next best price is if you pay me while in Japan. I can accept PayPal, Visa, MC or Discover. The higest price is for koi I buy for resale after I get back.
At the end of each day in Japan I'll post photos and make comments on the koi I find. My focus will be on those koi that have been paid for in advance and those koi individuals have asked for me to look for.
I will offer grow on service in one of my mud ponds for any of the high end koi that individuals buy and the fee is $200 per year for tosai and $300 per year on nisai.
The advantage of paying in advance is that I'll be able to get the koi if I find it. I've learned a lot during my 3 previous trips. During my second trip I received an email from a client asking for a certain variety nisai. Unfortunately it was too late because I had been to the breeder that had some beautiful examples of that variety and I wasn't able to go back before I had to come home.
I will have to bring the koi into Atlanta Air Port and clear customs and then I'll bring them back to the farm where each box from the same breeder will go into a separate tank and under go six weeks of quarantine. The koi will be arriving here in the States the end of April or first of May.
