It is important to keep the whole unit level. I used zip ties to secure it to the fence.
Laura is out of town for 10 days so that's all I get to keep it up for. If you are watching, HI HONEY!?!

I hooked up the unit at 9:25 and started it. THe glue should have dried by now.
Here you see the bio balls (small, 1") in the unit. It's what I had so I went with it.
I have enough for a second. Although I think if I make a second I may get kicked out of the house. there isn't room enough for two phoam phraxionators and me (according to my DW).
Two minutes in, already phoam starting. This is much better than last year.
May that thread rest in peace.

Hopefully by morn, I will have a yummy protein drink.

great ethan!
next time you have a chance, you may want to use the 'interceptor' so you no longer need a ball valve but just a 'blade' made of cut-out plastic. refer to the link below starting post 59.

I thought about doing that, but I had a credit at home depot that was burning a hole in my pocket, so I was okay with splurging.
I returned a sensor sump pump that wasn't working, and bought a 3,000 gph waterfall style pump to use for this setup, so I didn;t have to re-route any of my existing filtration. teh pump will also work well with draining the pond for water changes.
Here's what I came out to this morning. Much had already broken down, but I was getting a nice dry phoam.

after the phoam has collapsed with the heat of the day.

Whoa Ethan. I guess you got it "tweaked" without too much effort. Looks to be running great. So, what do you guess your flow rate to be and did you have to close down the ball valve on the 2" at all?

Ethan I have found that some 5 gal buckets actually hold 6 gal of water filled to the top. make sure you use a graduated container with volume marks on it for flow calculations.

Great thread Ethan! Everytime I start to consider making a FF DG rolls her eyes at me. I don't know how you get away with it !!
On a serious note, is your water soft? I have very hard water here and am not sure that I'll get much foam.

No plants... just fish. How much improvement would I get by maintaining 0.01% salt? I'm pretty sure I can get foam on my QT bc it shows up at the base of my shower return, but that's probably due to the overstocking condition right now. I don't want to maintain that level just to produce foam... Do you think it is possible to build a small scale version of yours to test foam production capability?
you don't even have to glue the pieces really to get an idea of whether you will get foam. dry fit the pieces snuggly, and then see what happens. then, if you are gettting the results you want, glue them. It may leak slightly when you test it for an hour or so, but keep an eye on it, and see what you get.
I got phoam again. 3rd or 4th day in a row. I had phoam all afternoon yesterday. It never stopped. It slowed, but never stopped.
I am making one of these for a member here who asked for me to make one.

larger pipe used on both the water column and the base where water settles and bubbles settle out. This means longer dwell time. Just like settling out solids with a settlement chamber, the bubbles need a short time, enough to settle UP and out.
I used a ball valve on the end to adjust height of water in the base, which permits me to adjust flow, a tad, but more importantly, the height of the water. Before I just had a swivel pipe that moved up and down, and that was ineffective.
