Others will purchase items such as Clarity Units which are guaranteed to do their work. They are very nice and high end, and look far better than what I created. They are pretty much the nicest units out there you can buy.

I happen to fall into the bubble headed type. I have a CCFF (counter current foam fractionator) that I DIY'd and I'm happy very with it. I have provisions for a second twin unit, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

The reason for my post here is just to say there are some very interesting designs out there. One of the more interesting ones is actually in use at the commercial level and it involves using vacuum. I guess lowering the pressure allows the water to give the DOCs more freely (or deeper) and is somehow more energy efficient than without the vacuum. Almost all of the theory and application designs come from waist management (and lots of government grants for the same).

Ethan, What would be the max size of pump for one of your PP's?
Is 3500 to much water moving through it?

The first step towards getting somewhere, is to decide you are not going to stay where you are.

I know you directed your question towards Ethan - I built a counter current FF using a 6" x 5' contact chamber. As Ethan said - and I totally agree - it's all about dwell time. If you flow more water, you need a larger contact chamber and (for CC FF) more air.

I flow about 3100GPH through mine.

would you consider this a mini-bakki shower with the amount of flow going through a 6" pipe? i am thinking about changing it to skimmer, pump, bakki shower to two tprs. i have a es3500 on this circuit and i do not think that is enough flow for a bakki shower. therefore, i was going to built 2 pHpH's and split the flow between both. just wondering how the pHpH's compare to bakki shower in biological filtration?

Yeah, I suppose 1500 gph going through a six inch pipe would be similar to flow in a bakki style shower.

I really don't know how it would do as a stand alone bakki style filter....as in, two of the units.

What I do know is that only around a cubic foot of the bio balls fit into a 6 foot tall unit, so in two, you would get TWO cubic feet of media. That is not very much considering that one of birdman's trays in his smaller bakki style shower setup holds 3 cubic feet of media alone.

I only have about 45" of height to work with, do you think that would be tall enough?

Here is a 4" version made with ABS with a 2" outlet. 66" tall with near 1 cu ft of bioballs and some bird netting on top to act as a filter/distributor. I'm pumping about 700 gph (+-><). Second pic was after 2 hours of operation.

I think something is better than nothing. I don't see why it wouldn't.

David, what was the approximate cost using ABS?

Yes I modified the one I made last year to follow your design and it works better. It took me all of 2 hours and that includes the trip to the hardware store to get the new ABS parts.

Ethan, just wanted to say thanks for sharing your design idea. Five minutes in with a little tweaking and i have plenty of phoam.I spray painted mine a shade of brown to blend into the landscape a bit, and its not so bad. Thanks again.

Holy crap ! How did they end killing the blob in that old movie? You might want to start planning in case that thing starts thinking.
