      1. Would the 6" PP benefit from reducing the diameter of the vertical pipe to 4", while keeping the rest 6"? I would think that more flow per cross sectional area would give more turbulence (F = ma). I guess choosing a pipe diameter could be a tradeoff between water velocity and amount of media that could fit.
It has been my experience that a 4" diameter vertical pipe of 3 feet or more works fine.

      2. At the tee, is it better to narrow the waste exit diameter at the water level or immediately above it? In other words, is the narrower exit supposed to facilitate the foam to exit more quickly or is it supposed to decrease the surface area of the water at the tee? For example, I noticed in the 4" PP design that the waste exit has a 2" reducer bushing but the water level is still at the 4" part. However, in the 6" PP design the water surface is 4" in diameter and not 6" with a 4" reducer above it.
The waste foam collecting area needs to be big enough for time for the bubbles to rise up and form foam.
The foam needs to push up to exit. 2" foam exit seems to work best for me.

      3. I noticed that the water level gurgles and oscillates a lot in the tee, which prevents me from setting the water level very close to the exit. Flow is about 1200 gph following Ethan's 6" PP design. Any ideas to reduce this?

Any comments on any of the questions would be appreciated!
If you mess too much with Ethan's design and do not get foam... then you need to build one that looks like the examples posted that work.
Then once you are getting foam... you can experiment with modifications.

Real Phoam production is in the spring when there is large amounts of pollen and mold spoors in the air. This organic mater dissolves in the water and helps create the DOC's. My Phoam Phractionator does not produce much phoam after August.

Beautiful job on the pipe decorations!

Be sure you have the valve closed down enough to back the water up in the sanitary tee.
Mine would make the most foam overnight and early am.

I have mine just at the base of the tee, should I move it higher say 1/4 inch past the tee line...

Can you see foam looking down into the tee?

I would. I think mine was almost at the top of the tee. The bubbles need to be able to collect in that
tee to allow the foam to form.

The PP did make some foam but the water level wasn't high enough for it to escape..Ill raise water level tonight...not a whole lot of bubbles that I see. Must be micro bubbles...

Foam fractionators only work if there is enough DOCs or other dissolved stuff to make foam.

Once phoam is produced you need deal with the waste which is bad stuff. It will turn you nice white pipe to an ugly stained mess. You should add a 45 degree bend on top of the tee to divert the phoam. Mine has killed the grass around where the waste goes

Trust me ric there should be plenty of foam...I'm getting the 90 degree tomorrow. I raised the water level about 2inches from that top of the tee. This way any foam will come out...at least that's the plan...lol This is kind of exciting for me never built anything this massive before..

The tee appears to be at 90 degrees vertical in the pic's, would offsetting the tee a little not help to spill the foam into the offset fitting?

No vertical wall for the foam to climb. Reduce the distance for it to travel out the tee piece.

Trust me... the foam fractionator will work fine if you follow the directions.

Then there should be no problem if you follow the directions and use a proper plastic media.

Sure makes my lunch taste better.

I had my pp after shower the same way and just used a sieve screen to cause the foam to comeout of the tee. I need to make one again and see if I get foam

Like they said, it works great as is. The ball valve after the tee can be adjusted so there's a nice bunch
of bubbles forming in the top of the tee and the foam will quickly build at the top and rise out of it.
If the tee is angled you have a harder time slowing the flow enough without overflowing water
out the top of the tee.

davidjensen, I am surprised that your foam has killed the grass. I was planning on collecting and adding my liquid detritus to the garden I would think that all that stuff is composed of organics which would be good for the soil.

I imagine it is like using too much fertilizer which can burn plants. I did use it for my roses but watered it down and spread it between them all. They did beautifully.

      My new Foam Fractionator

I finally installed my "foam fractionator" AKA "protein skimmer" into my filtering system. I am still going to do a little tweaking on-and-off but for the most part it is operational.

Here is a link to my YouTube video.
