The template I made of the faceplate is a different size than what I need.

The reason I want the faceplate guard is to keep tosai out of the skimmer.
This is were the idea came from:
I know they sell these in the U.K., I have not found a source in the U.S.

Looks good Rich .
The original was made from fiberglass sheet only because it was available , but any flat plastic sheet would work.
Here is how I attached it . I made a PVC frame that slides in to the skimmer body , and is removable .
I bolted two PVC Tee's into the top of the skimmer , that the frame slides into.
The two bolts (red arrows )act as pins ,and are simply slid in and out to remove the faceplate frame
Forgot to mention that the frame was 1/2" PVC , and the T's are 3/4" , so that the 1/2" legs will slide all the way in .

Well done. I really like the diagonal slots. They allow skimming at all water levels. I had horizontal bars that don't allow true surface skimming when the water level lowers a bit.

Here is the template for my other pool skimmer with 6" x 5.5" opening.

I need to do something like this to mine. I have stupid bullfrogs that get into my skimmer. One of them got into the drain line and clogged it up the other day. Hmm... wonder if my 3D printer can print something big enough?
At under 10$ I have been very happy with these:

I did need to make a few adjustments when I first bought them, trimming down one side of the securing tabs. Maybe 20 minutes of work, and they have performed perfectly.
