I saw a city water treatment plant that was being constructed and they seamed many pieces together. It was a huge project. I know it can be done, but I don't know the equipment you would need to rent or the process.

I did it in the middle of my stream. I used the heavy duty seam tape on the bottom and butted the two pieces of liner. I put another layer on the top. The liner was new and clean.

Old EPDM is problematic IF it is not clean (very clean & free of algae & biofilm build-up).
New liner is a lot easier.
Yep, I've done it a couple of times. Firestone sells a kit for just this purpose, and it works well. You can find it all over - these guys have a decent picture of it:

And WAC is right: a new liner is MUCH easier to seal.
However, I spliced a used liner together one spring five or six years ago - the liner had been in use for more than a year, and was under a running stream. Despite leaving about 10' of unspliced overlap, I still had a leak (a hard lesson in capillary flow....). So, I dug out underneath the stream, slid boards in to keep the liner out of the mud and built a tent over the top. After I scrubbed and dried the liner, I used the seaming kit in ~45 deg F weather.
No leaks for two years (I moved, so I can't testify past that) and I was checking closely.

I have some roofer friends do my pond .It has 3 splices does not leak . They use a special cleaning primer smells like kerosine . they clean about 10" on each piece . They use a glue apply gluewith paint roller to both sides . Let glue dry . must have a nice flat surface to work on lay the pieces together ,once they touch there stuck ,then use a like a wallpaper roller ,,, after that seam sealer on the joint
