      Future shows?

The committee will be working on the next show soon. It will probably be after Christmas of next year, to get away from the pressure and distrraction of the holidays.

A comment made after last year's show, which I didn't see until we were well underway for this year's was the desire of someone to have the shows move toward the use of video. One of the comments of the goldfish judge, Mr. Peter Ponzio was that judging fish without being able to see them move, was one of the challenges of the internet type show.

I have a video camera and a cell phone that shoots video as well. Some of the small point and shoot cameras will shoot video. I am not sure what other methods there are that we could use to get the videos into the computer.

If we were to do video, there would have to be rules on the videos that would establish the resolution, and the length of the video clip, the video format, and the things that should be included in the clip, ie. postion, view of all fins, view of both sides of the fish, etc.

I am interested in knowing if we were to move to video, or video with still, if it would eliminate anyone that has shown, or might think about showing in the future. What say you all?

I think it would be great for the judges but unfortionantly there are people like me that are computer inept and have problems getting photos yet alone video. I would need all the help I could get.

Peter has a point and it even goes with koi judging....
..years back ,I had the honer of diercting the nature coast koi show....the head judge was Larry Gill and the candidate judge was Joe White.....well I was invited by Larry to join them[for the learning] in the final judging.....we were looking at 3 kohaku deciding the winner,,,one fish had a great pattern and confirmation.....Larry pointed out it was the worst in his opinion,,,it was weak....it took alot of effort for the fish to move.....the elegance of the swimming in larry's mind ,was a deciding factor.....he was right ,the fish looked good still ,but looked awful swimming...............

Maybe the first time they do it...it should be on an experimental basis. Still make it a show that judges by pictures...but, include the video if you can. See how many can enter and properly take video. If it works well for most...the following year can be a video competition.

That's a good thought - wouldn't eliminate anyone from showing. Maybe the judges could wait until after they made their decisions from the "still" pictures to see if the video made a big difference.

I would hate to see anyone not show because they couldn't do a video. I didn't show this year 'cause I couldn't net, bowl and take pictures by myself. Lame excuse, I know.

Same here. So I am buying the measuring bowl from Koi Acres group buy.

I thought about the video concept when I didnt have a bowl to measure the koi. I think video can be a secondary way of judging. So you could give video some extra points (very small points), to get started with the first show. If you feel that worked well, increase the points for videos in the next show.

I can help you with all the knowledge I have with online video.

Video in addition to pics? Still need an accurate way of measuring the fish. Is the video still in the bowl?

Pushing the show off to later makes it into the next year. Why not early November?

Yes, I agree. You need an accurate way of measuring fish.

Personally, I like taking video of fish swiming in ponds and show tanks. It can show off the beauty and conformation. Its not practical here to show off in a show tank. When taking video in a bowl, fish will be stressed and will move fast, in most cases. But if the bowl is big enough, its good. It will be very challenging to take video of tiny fish in a bowl. You have to chase them.

I would say, video of fish swimming in the pond is appropriate, if you get good footage. That will take this show to next level. We could see how the fish swim in the owners pond and may be see some of the other fishes in the pond. This might be one of the outstanding thing from normal koi show. Very natural and see the fish swim in the pond rather than on a show tank.

I would love to see the show moved into next January. Even November starts to get tight on time (we have a number of koi events in October and November on the West Coast), although on the other hand the northern KPers who want to shoot video of their fish in the pond might prefer November to January.

If we had the same allowed time for video submittal as the pics I don't think it would be an issue. There was quite a generous window for when the pictures were taken.
I do think video would take it to the next level and give a much better representation of the fish.

I agree with Mary, why keep moving it later, why not earlier before the holiday push starts.

I know there are Koi shows going on all the time somewhere but the video and pictures could be taken during the week.

I also agree that, at least my fish, would not look good swimming in the measuring tub, because they get stressed and nervous and are splashing around but a still picture could be taken to show the length and then video could be taken of that fish in the pond where they will be at home.

I just think a pond won't give the perspective on conformation or quality.
Tubs and bowls offer a very specific view, no other fish is in the picture and depth wouldn't be a concern.

Susan is trying her best to get the ribbons out. The snowstorm in NC badly damaged her pond, so she has been busy trying to save her fish. She's also still very sick. I talked to her yesterday and she will be getting them out a few at a time.

I would like to be able to view the entered fish in an additional manner. I know the judges can see competitors together, I would like us to be able to.

Its hard to compare fish entered going back n forth etc.

Even if its a thread once entries are closed. Example "Kohaku size 2" with all the photos, can even list tank number etc. I know its a little more work, but I would greatly appreciate it. I know we dont get that in a real world show, but this is not a real world show. I believe it will help us to learn as well.

In addition- I think the video should be an in addition to - i.e. photos are entries, video an added feature. If it came down to two fish that could be a deciding factor. I also feel that pond video is worthless - depth, water movement, other fish detract from the entire idea. If we want in pond video why not offer a "Pond tour" as an added feature- with ponds listed & video along with individual photos & info (if they choose too ad) including size of pond, filtration, age, etc. Leave judging video to bowl video.

      My 2 cents
      ~Melissa
