Apolonasgr36 Asagi and Shusui grow out

A little background history of this fish grow out.
When I got the Quality Koi were tiny. They were barely 5’’ and couple even less than that. They were photographed and the they were placed in my indoor 1050 gallon QT. Twelve days prior I had gotten 9 Dainichi Tosai Showas for a grow out. They were already settled and they were between 6’’ and 7’’ by that time. I also had five Hi Utsuri from Shinoda Koi farm between 6 and 8 inches that I have gotten 5 days prior. I have a monster Hi Utsuri from him that I love. His fish has great body and it really gets jumbo in a harry. I wanted to see if I could duplicate the size of what I have got with better skin quality. Twenty two small fish in a 1050-gallon QT with great filtration to grow them out fast. Not the greatest recipe for success. To compensate water was trickling 24/7 to the tune of at least 150 gallons a day a (15% change) and the temperature was kept between 75F and 77F constantly with an online heater. Heavy aeration and big time filtration with an Advantage 10 bead filter and a 55 gallon moving bed with almost 4 cubic feet of k1 media. Feeding after a month was left on two auto feeders that fed them 8 times a day and the amount was gradually increased, as they were getting bigger. Food was a mixture of 60 % Blackwater Gold and 40% Saki Hikari color food.
The first month the fish went thru 1 week of resting and 3 weeks of shotgun medication for parasites. That whole month the fish was fed very little. After that month, the feed amount increased and finally two Koicafe feeders were feeding them 8 times a day. The amount of food also gradually increased per each time. By the middle of August, they were fed 8 times to the max of each feeder per time. One feeder at a time four times per feeder in 1hour 45 minutes apart. The lights were on for 15 hours and off for 9 hours to extend the time between feeding.
The growth that I got from the quality Koi was way less than the Showas and the Hi Utsuris. Two of the Hi Utsuris hit almost 18’’ and most of the Showas were between 14 and almost 17’’. Only 1 Asagi got to be almost 15 inches One shusui 13.5’’ inches another shusui 13’’ and the rest 12 and under. One of them is little more than 8.5 inches only. Quality on any fish that is grown fast suffers but the quality in the Quality Koi suffered the most. There is not any algae in my tank and the lights are regular florescent so that definitely has an impact in the koi’s colors. Here they come

P.S. A plug for one of our own Koiphen vendor's product. Koiclay from Koi Village Koi farm.

The last 3 weeks I dropped the temp to 71 and I added Gene’s Koiclay. The fish went crazy with hunger color on all the fish improved dramatically (specially on the Showas) I did the same outside with the temperatures at 66-67 F and also the fish became more active eating the same amount of food much faster and producing less waist. Colors are noticeably more vibrant in less than a month in all my adult Koi! I am dosing clay every 3 days 5 fold the recommended amount and the pond clears in less than 8 hours. I am a believer!!!! Gene’s Koiclay is here to stay!!!!!! I wish I was using this product long time ago.

Just for laughs the bigest in weight Hi Utsuri that grew almost 11'' in 5 months in the same water. This one is 1/2 inch shorter than the other Hi utsuri that grew as much but it was 1/2 inch bigger to begin with, but it is by far heavier than its bigger sister. The color is off compare to the other Hi Utsuri.

Wow but I guess that proves the just because they grow faster doesn't mean the look better

Where the smaller ones keep in the same place as the bigger ones? They kept their color and have better conformation than the bigger ones

Absolutely. That is the lesson I got out of that too. Yes, all were kept in the same place. Twenty two fish in all. What you see is purely genes. There was always food available for all Koi. Some ate more and some a lot more. I kind of screwed up some of the Dainichi Showas that way too. The bigger they are the more windows and weaker beni they have. My very first grow out. I am learning.

No those are in the new pond. They were Platinum’s and two Hi Utsuris. One is gone as you know and at the time was the same size with the one in the photo. Skin and color on the one gone was ten times better. The green water was doing its job. These grew in my permanent QT downstairs in my basement. No sunlight no algae plus very fast growth equals poor coloration. The Quality Koi in that environment totally fell apart. The Dainichi and the other Hi Utsuris held up much better. The one in the picture has some Ki in it from a baby.

I have a Hi Utsuri in my big pond from the same breeder. When I got it it was 17'' inches on 4/05/08 It is now 30-32 inches and the head and body width and girth of this fish makes every other fish of similar size look like anemic. It is growing still like crazy.

The reticulation and hi look pretty good on some of those asagis. Did you have an idea of how they would turn out b4 for they went into your QT tank?

That fish kept on doing the same thing repeatedly in the same corner. I would push it away block it and then it would go back in that corner and jump. It must have done it 7-8 times. One of those times, I caught it with the camera. It was not intended but I thought it would be cool to share.

No, I had no idea. I knew nothing about Quality Koi's development, bloodline or trades.
I am very new at this and most of the things are a mystery to me. One thing I am learning is that small things can make a big difference.
This summer I run three Qt's and it was my first summer with my big new pond. I created different environments for the fish and looked how they behaved how their color developed growth etc. I have a much better idea of the fish's needs now. Cause and effect type of study.
My approach in Koi keeping in my main pond has changed. In addition, I am planning to run the new pond differently than my big pond just to see the effect on the development.
That is what keeps it interesting to me. I am a person of extremes and Koi keeping is all about balance. I am learning to make small changes and wait, (I hate waiting) and that is a personal challenge to me. Find the balance ......
      Long ways from that. LOL
