Matt, thanks for that! I don't actually know how much I should be feeding them. I'm giving them about 7 heaping tablespoons of plankton and crumble, 5x a day, walking it all around the pond, dusting it in. They're still chowing down when i finish a lap, so i dust the rest of it as I go. Thoughts on this? I have enough to increase as much as req'd., just don't want to overfeed. ? They're going after medium-sized pellets now. Turtles also.
      TY,

I've never worked with mud pond spawns. So yours is a different paradigm. That sounds like a lot of food, but you are scattering over a large area. As long as it isn't piling up on the bottom (if you can see the bottom) and your fry have a nice shape, you are probably doing okay. Plus, you have several adults in there that might clean up any excess. I know mine would in a lined pond.

It also matters whether you have say 5000 2" fry or say 2000 1" fry. The former group of fry would have 20 times the mass of the latter. (5/2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 20) And it is a lot easier to estimate size than the number. If you have a bunch that are big enough to eat medium sized pellets, I would think they would be able to take the 35 tablespoons a day.

Matt, thanks for your reply. Nope, I cannot see the bottom. The deep end is about six feet and the shallow end is prob. 2.5' deep but thick with cattails. There is an assortment of fry sizes, half at 2". :P ALL of my koi act like I'm starving them and I'm sure that I'm not! I've got a couple of good-sized painted turtles in the Lower who are doing clean up and going after koi pellets, too. I'll stick with the 35 tbsps for another week and report back.

Sudden crisis on way to resolution...

      all,

I haven't been doing water quality checks due to belief in flow-through happiness.
But - decided it's responsible to test water, regardless.

      I started just with ammo.
      Well = 0
      Big pond = 0
      Middle pond =0
      Lower pond =.5

      This created total freak-out.
Why is my ammo high with flo-thru?
Ans: flo-thru not evacuating water sufficiently.

Got some advice from friends off-line (you know who you are ) and now have a plan.
We're setting up a small sump pump inside a bucket inside a net basket and going to pump down 1/6 of volume = 25,000 gallons. We're in a rainy period right now, rain expected all week, so I can rob the other ponds of well water for the week and refill the Lower with same amount we pull out and the rain will lift all boats.

We will then have to find better solution for speeding up the outflow which tends to clog with algae.

This was a sudden crisis but I hope I can report resolution very soon.
Wish me and fishies good luck!

Kevin, Midori Is Us. Hoping for at least six good looking ki shusui for the 2020 spawn. Meanwhile, while loving my jelly-bean babies, I mostly call out "Fishy. Here Fishy Fishies" to my big and named koi. Lol. During harvests, after they've been measured and photographed, I wish them a good winter.
My cats and I have much deeper conversations.

I still go fishing and I talk to my koi.... But ive always been a catch and release, barb-less hook kind of guy. The people who I fish with, or near, think im a nut job. After I catch them I thank them for the fight (out loud), kiss them on the head, then release/revive them. Its what my grandpa thought me to do and now thats what im teaching my nephews lol. I think its important to have a great deal of respect for all wild animals.

Wine, wine, wine. :) and new photos!

It's been a busy few days around here.
First, found an ammo reading that freaked. me. out.
Got help from koiphriends and irl folk who are pictured below.

      What's going on?
Outflow blocks with algae so, we put a couple of sump pumps in the deep end, inside two net baskets so as to pump out water and not little fish.

Meanwhile, I found a very well-written book for fish farmers that if you are chemistry challenged, as i am, helps to understand wth is going on with your water and why. I will add the link.

After pumping down the water for a day, (about six inches, 540 gallons an hour for 13 hours) I refilled for a day (1000 gallons an hour), rinse wash repeat all weekend.

It helped lower my ammo -- now i'm showing .25 nitrite.

So, back to ditching water, doubling down on on in-flow/out-flow and making better plans for future.
This eve it rained like crazy for ten minutes. I'm glad for it.

Pictured below: Monty in the boat, blocked out-flow pipes, Sean helping out, Fred overseeing, me (not pictured) wringing hands and wine-ing.

      Fish post after this.

Fry turning into real ki shusui, midori and to be determined. ;)

One day, all the fry were pretty much white/yellow/green squiggles.
On 7-17-17 many sprang into grown-up patterns.
This story is not done, as you all know.
Some will be gold-y flashes in the pan -- and some dull ones will shine.
Here's to hoping I can keep them healthy and get a handful of F2 ki shusui to raise for a 2020 spawn.

I have toooooooo many fish -- just sayin'
