Dan, THANKS!
I just came back from breakfast at the tosai pond.
It's crazy!
The fish look very healthy. So, whatever I'm doing, it's working for them.
I think technically I have too many fish in that pond.
250 koi in something like 200,000 gals.
Hard to know the gallonage for sure as we put down a new mud floor so many times, but at any rate, the pond is flow-through because I pump in 10-12 gallons a minute 24/7.
I also use Aqua Medzyme and Sludge Buster in all the ponds.
I see no bacterial issues, no parasite issues, so I'm giving much credit to the Aqua Medzyme folks.
I feed them Blackwater Creek Gold, no color-up food.
This pond gets sun until three in the afternoon.
And I guess all that blue clay is yummy.
Uh, what was the question?
Oh.
There was no question.
I'm blathering.

Wayne, have been thinking about this last few hours (!!!) and wonder if net baskets in the actual pond might be easier for me with less risk for fish.
I'll find a photo of the pond in a little while, but it's roughly a rounded rectangle, 120' x 40', deep end about 8 feet, shallow end about 3', and it gets an algae bloom for much of the year.
The little red barn is on the eastern long side of the pond and i have electricity to it, and i also have a 2" hose pumping fresh well water into the pond, 24/7.
So, if we built a walkway crosswise at the deep end, and strung net baskets along the walkway, and lined the baskets with either fiberglass screening mentioned on KP by a member, or some other form of spawning media?
Say six baskets for sake of argument, say 10 long x 6 wide x 5 deep (just making this up) and and put the mating pairs in the nets. Document with pix in plastic envelopes. Saying door screens contain the eggs and milt somewhat per basket, then, after the spashy-splashy, release the parents after each spawn into the pond.
Continuing...
say we then let the fry hatch in their baskets, keeping them under the poly netting over the pond, and the air is pumping into the pond and so is the water. and the water in that pond is full of algae, minerals, etc.
And say we don't need to do too much now with special feeding, insuforia, daphnia, etc., but let the green water do the work it did with these fry...
And now, we let the fry grow out some in their baskets with the benefit of the 200,000 gals of circulating, aerated green water -- and then can do side-by-side comparisons.
Does this sound workable???
Because I can imagine this. And it seems like I could even manage this once the spawning part was completed.
Your thoughts?

Hi MAX and Ki Team !
I feel a new book could be coming ! and it won't be any murder mistery ! more of How to breed '' Ki shusui '' Outside of Japan !.
The colours are there now as Dan said it's Working Perfectly in the mud and clay !.
And would you mess with a working natural way how you have created perfect,
results !.
And would you need to as you seem to have the right things going on in that mud pond ! and give your self and team more work !.
but you would get the answer's to who and what did create the right mix !,and your method is working very well !.
So why mess with a working model as the mix of gene's seem right and in total balance !.
But we are human and want certain things answered and we mess with things its just us I guess !.
Wayne, so just to be sure, you're saying "Yes!" "Nets in the pond."
--- So, I'm thinking now, that a net mesh fine enough to keep in little babies, will clog with algae before long....hmmm.
--- I'm also thinking that we could sex the fish in October and release the top 24 back into the tosai pond, then play at making matches with pictures until end of April. Then seine while the weather is still cool, pull the fish, assign them and their roommates to net baskets, fill the pond. Dim the lights. Put on the sexy music. :lalala:
----- I have a new thought, that I should put the walkways and nets toward the SHALLOW end. That way I/we can get into the water if need be to adjust nets catch fish. Also, it is more narrow at the shallow end so we don't have to build a suspension bridge
Pictures:
1 - I took from the shallow end, under the net.
2 - of the shallow end. Would probably want to float two walkways that have styrofoam under them and anchor them to the sides of the pond just around where those rocks are.
Those are my lightbulbs for the day.

Wayne says'yes ! (feels like the man from Del' monte !lol but these are not canned peache's )
Algae can be controled in a mud pond with fresh bakers yeast and barley straw and this will also promote plankton for fry so straw will kill algae ,yeast will eat the waste up and fry will eat the resultant plankton !,and nets won't get clogged by algae !sounds like a plan ! add straw and yeast 14 days before planned spawnings !.,and add yeast to ponds every 7 days with nets in pond to keep clean !.
So Why not as you seem to have a good plan and all worked out !
All im going to add is you will need baskets 2-3 foot apart so you don't have milt going into each basket with differant pairs in and messing up the whole point of segregation in the first place ,that's the only problem I see !.
But I leave that one to you or you just leave it up to nature as before !,I will leave the big one in your hands as it's all down to time and budget and I would not want to influenece you here because i see your doing a great job so far !.
And as Dan pointed out your results are Fantastic just letting them get on with it as nature seems to do its magic ! .
So yes its a hard one but if you require answers to which one is the best cross or back cross then some kind of plan must be in place to give you the results for that pairing !.
I will support you any way you want to go with this and in the end it's your call !.
All the best Maxine !.

Wayne, saving this for reference in 2014!
And I have a question about that date and whether or not I'm rushing F2.
Bindi likes to wait until year 3 or 4 before she does a spawn.
I'm not sure if that's to make sure the fish eggs are mature? Or if it's to protect her oyagoi from damage? Or what?
(Bindi! Why have you deserted us??? Come back. We miss you.)
My tosai are one year old.
And I'm planning a spawn for them at 2 years on the nose.
maybe they're going to do what they want -- which was my exact experience with their qt spawning parents, but before you take your hands off the steering wheel, what are your thoughts on age to spawn???
Thanks! And thanks for the straw/yeast formula, no joke.
"Please deliver two tons of straw and three pallets of yeast. Yes. That's what the Man from Del Monte said. Tons. Pallets. Mark the date and don't be late!"
More later.

Question for any savvy KPer or Mod.
If we wanted to Skype the fish pull in October, or something like Skype, is there a way to do that so folks (Team Ki) can chime in live as we examine the future oyagoi.

As far as I know, there is no program that will hook into KP for this type of thing. For our koi show seminars a couple of shows ago, we used some webinar host. Skype was good for our committee meetings. The webinar providers programs allow for upload of powerpoint presentations, and the use of laser pointers, drawing over pictures, etc., during the talk. I don't think Skype will do that. I suspect a remote camera could be used on Skype Though my experience has always been with the built in camera. Since you will probably not be wanting to do drawings and laser pointer, Skype may be the best bet. To keep it fairly quick, I would not allow all participants to use the camera function.
Attendees for either have to be known ahead of time and essentially dial into the Skype address, or webinar session address. I think that when we used the webinar, it was a stand alone, with the attendees preregistering through the committee chair, so that they could get the address and access code. The webinars had a price for setup that was based on number of attendees and as I remember for a group of 25, it wasn't too high a price, but as the numbers went up, the price did also.
You could set up a Skype group call and see how many you can get on ahead of time. Make an announcement and get interested people to call into the Skype account to show interest and find a time for a test.

Richard, thanks so much.
Right you are. Not a webinar, just a simple connection which ultimately might be unwieldy down by the lower pond. And even if we could do that, could we go international with Skype, so that Wayne could look in from across the really big pond. I'll work on this with a friend in tech support. See what I can find out.
all the best,
max

Hi Max, your koi are looking amazing. I dont know how you drag yourself away from the pond everyday! I was wondering about the plain blue shusui in the third picture. Do you think that fish will develop colour? Have you had any that have changed drastically that have started out like that? Im asking as I have 2 the same and I am starting to see colour development, Im wondering how far they will go.
Cheers, Aaron
